Hi, my name is Kristi. I was sentenced to 20 months (federal time)on June 7th. I was given the self-report option. I was told I would get a letter from BOP within 4-6wks. I don't know how much time you have after you receive the letter thou. I have a friend who was sentenced to a camp in florida. My biggest fear is being sent too far for my children to visit. Have 3, and one is disabled. My mother is getting temp custody til this is over. Any advise on who I request (me or my atty) to get close to family. How long after self-rpt do you get visits, how much phone time? Also I was told I would get a further reduction in sentence for cooperation. Can you work for the gov to educate others not to get in this position. Teach others about how you could be caught up in a conspiracy and not even be aware? I don't even know exactly what questions to ask or not to ask. I am a friendly and outgoing person and I've heard you have to keep to yourself and not get caught up in anything on the inside. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and a very warm welcome to PTO. I don't have any answers to your specific questions, but hang tight and I am sure someone will be along soon with the information you are looking for.

You will get 300 minutes (either prepaid, collect, or a combination of both) each month. You can use them as you choose, but remember, if you use them all up the first week, you will not have any more minutes credited to your account until the first of the the following month. If your visitors are listed in your PSI, then you can have visits the first time visiting days roll around. If not they have to fill out a visitation form that you send them, its returned to your counselor, and once they are approved to visit, you will be notified.

Hope this helps a little.

I was sentenced on June 1st and just recvd my letter a few days ago. Hope that helps. I know that the BOP tries to place you within 500 miles of your home, but with that said they really have many things to consider (ie - security level, bed availability, etc.) The Judge who sentenced me put a recomendation in for the camp I am going to, and sometimes the BOP tries to follow the judicial recomendations. Good luck to you and Welcome to PTO...

My fiance is taking me "where-ever" I go, so could he complete the form while he is there or can I request the visitation forms ahead of time?

Can I get my atty to request this from the judge now? Or is it too late? I was/am supposed to receive a modification of sentence for cooperation. How much of the 20 months do you have to serve? And, I had a friend say you got 54 days off your sentence for self-reporting? And, was told you are kept in a holding cell there (where ever) for a few days while you are being processed?
Any info on this?

Hello and welcome to PTO.

It has been my experience (4 federal womens camps) that they do not keep you in a holding cell for a few days. You should be processed in the same day.

All inmates in the federal system are eligible for 47-54 good days per year regardless if you self-surrender. Therefore you serve 85-87% of your sentence.

Generally the BOP will house you as close to home as possible. As far as requesting this specifically now, that is something you will have to ask your attorney.

I also read that if your sentence was under 36 months and you had served at least half (10months) you would be eligible for half-way house then that amount (remainder of 10months) split between halfway and home confinement? Do you know anything on this?

Kkelly - It is my understanding ( my attorney and I were talking about amended Judgement and Commitments yesterday) that a Judge has 30 days to amended the J & C to reflect changes to the sentence or a judicial recomendation to a camp - Yes by all means ask your attorney. After 30 days the Judge can do a Judgement Nunc Pro Tunc to amend.

As far as the time off of your sentence - You don't get time off for self surrender - It is calculated as Good Conduct time - since my sentence is only for 6 or 12 months (we have yet to get this one figured out) I can't help you but Greyghost would be the one to ask.

What area of the country are you from? This would give you a fairly good idea of where the BOP MIGHT place you....DO you have any idea what camp you want to go?

There are many very knowledgable people here at PTO so if you have questions, just post them, someone will come along with an answer (most of the time)....and if they can't answer it they will point you in the right direction.

kristi, that is not accurate. The judge has to specifically order a "split" sentence. If that is not ordered then you would be eligible to spend the last 10% of your sentence in a halfway house.

I am in upstate SC. My atty has been out of town and today was the first day we have talked since I was sentenced. He told me the only way to change anything was "if" and I emphasize IF, the prosecution WANTS any cooperation. I received a downward departure at my sentence date from 36 mos to 20mos and the judge said in court with further cooperation, he would further reduce my sentence. But I feel as if I am just sitting here and not being productive. I wrote a letter and faxed it to prosecutor today, but he won't see it til next week sometime. I will ask my atty about getting the judge to amend the J&C. But he told me anything at this point is just recommendations, that the BOP does whatever they want. Is that true?
I don't know any camps close to here, on the BOP website, I saw CT, KY, FL was the only camps close? Should I try to get in a min security place closer? like atlanta or something. I am really concerned about my 2 youngest children, I am a divorced mom and have been the sole support (dead-beat dad) for my 3kids for 5 years. My daughter is 10 and is disabled and with mental disability, her sole stability and caregiving has been from me. Her doctor even testified that if I were incarcerated, she would likely have to be put in a hospitol. I have no priors (not even a speeding ticket) and my conviction was for conspiracy to commit mail fraud, which is very broad. Actual crime was 8 incidents but was held accountable for 43 (because of my position was held accountable for my employees)! (sorry just venting a minute) I am very, very thankful thou, because I KNOW it could have been much worse. But anyway, if anyone could answer the above questions before I started rambling.....
Thanks
K

Your attorney is correct in that any recommendation as far as where you will be housed is just that, a recommendation.

There is no womens camp in Atlanta. There is a camp at Danbury, CT., Lexington KY., Alderson, W.V., and Coleman, FL., and I believe Marriana, FL. but I am not positive of that.

my friend is at The Marrianna camp. I ment the atlanta mim security facility (may be med?) vs- going to a camp? I don't really know the difference.

cjjack

There is no facility for women at all in Atlanta.

You can get information on furloughs at www.bop.gov (http://www.bop.gov).

About the reduction in time for assistance,BE CAREFULL! they will want you to sign a proffer agreement.notice how it is worded,"IF" your info is substancial, and "MAY" give a reduction. And if anything you say conflicts with ANY privious statment(one word even) this voids the proffer and YOU can be prossecuted for any info in the proffer.Again I say BE CAREFULL!!Very few people actually get the reduction....Welcome to PTO,...KEEP HOPE ALIVE...

Please remember as Cjjack mentioned, typically halfway house is a maximum of 10% of your sentence up to six months, but in your case the maximum halfway house, I believe, would be below two months with a 20mos sentence. Mr. Ashcroft made sure, inmates would NEVER exceed six months in halfway house ... Just my two cents ... Welcome to PTO!

Hi: I was a self-surrender. I got the news to report and I had two weeks. Your attorney will usually let you know what date and time to report. I was in Alderson and if you have to go to prison that is the place to be! It really is like a college campus. You are in a two story dorm like building. They call them cottages. After you arrive you will have oritentation and you will have to fill out a visitors list. These are people you want to have the right to visit you. After you fill out the paperwork they will approve your list and at that time..you can have visits.
You can receive letter at any time after you arrive. You will just have to give your family/friends your inmate number. and cottage Number. That will make the mail easier if you include those two things.
You will need money sent for your commisary account because you will probably want some makeup, snacks, etc. You can even buy gifts and send to your kids.
You will have plenty to keep you busy. You can play bingo,go to jazzercise and aerobics, church, beading classes. Stay busy and your time will fly.
The worst part is you will miss your family. You can use the phone and call them. Each call is limited to 15 minutes. If noone else is waiting for the phone you can just call them back if you need to talk longer. You have to put money on your phone account. It is kinda like buying minutes. There are no collect calls.
You will find that the group on women there are not violent and they probably should not even been in prison. Lots of conspiracy charges and you will find lots of dr's lawayers and upper crust people there. You will be fine and you do not have to stay to yourself. You will meet other women ....just like you... you will do find.

Charlotte, a few things have changed since you were there. First off ALL cottages have closed, they are no longer used. All imates reside in two large buildings called the A and the B building. Both buildings are two levels and each building is split up into 4 ranges (two on each level, one on one side of the building and one on the other i.e A1 A2 A3 A4). Not sure of the exact numbers in each range, but the floors are laid out with open cubes on each side and two girls (bunk beds) to each cube. Very Military basic training layout is the best I can descibe, only just a bit better than basic training, at least there are divider walls inbetween each cube at alderson unlike my basic training housing I had lol.

There has been talk of the cottages "possibly" being revamped but personally I do not see it happening. there have been rumurs of asbestos in the buildings and that alone is a huge expense to remove if it is true....again ROY is the term I belive (ROY=rumor on yard)

Also email is in existance at alderson and in mine and my wifes case the primary communication due to cost and real time. Phones are as you said 15mins per call and my wife buys mins and it is around 3.00 for one 15 min call if she buys the mins. There is an option for collect calls, but it is very exspesive (around 8.00 per 15 min call....highway robbery)

Anyway I am visiting this weekend (Labor Day) and hope all is well with everyone!!
