My name is Jonathan Wareham & I am a documentary filmmaker. we all know that the war on drugs has put hundreds of thousands, even millions of people behind bars, & is breaking apart millions of American families. I am including this as part of my focus in an upcoming documentary.
For the record, I have won an Emmy for editing, and have worked on some 250 tc shows and 20 feature films.
At this point I am shooting a film not just about the criminal justice system, but more imporatantly about the human side of incarceration. We should have the film complete by the end of the summer.
For 6-12 weeks I have setup a phone line for inmates and related parties to call. That number is 323 464 3697. I am looking for intelligent and creative rap or slam poetry to be included as part of the music score for the film. Men and women are both welcome to submit their work, as both men and women are incarcerated...
I respect that it may be difficult for people to call - even collect, and will attempt to be of assistance in that area where possible.
Please undersatand that this is a low budget shoot, not a major network show & we operate with a with a small crew. We are shooting in Los Angeles, New York, and Washington D.C. We expect to have the film complete by August 30th, and will attempt to maintain the phone line for as long as possible.
Inmates and their families should not expect financial rewards, but may use this forum to express themselves, with the possibility of being included in the film and subsequent compilation CD. A verbal consent from the inmate for use of the recordings will be required prior to any recordings. Inmates who are selected will be contacted if possible, and they shall be given a copy of the film and notification of film screenings.
