I just wondering... if you mail a letter out and the inmate is released before they get the letter, what happens to it? Would they just send it back? I mean, I doubt they do a mail forwarding thing... TIA.

They send it back, stating not in custody.

Agree with Kayla - whenever he was moved, before getting to his permanent camp, they'd send it back to me. They definitely do not forward it.

IN MOST STATES - if they are just transferred to another prison its forwarded.. however, if they are released the mail is returned to sender.. but I've seen it take weeks to be returned.

i sent my man a letter to the processing place and it has never been returned!!! that was like 2 months ago

i have no idea and if hes home with me i really wouldnt care. they could read my letter over the loudspeaker for the whole prison to hear, he would be home with me and thats all that matters, but i do wonder, they probally just throw it out or something.

Thanks for everybody's help... if they throw it away or send it back, doesn't really matter, I just wanted to know what would happen to it. Thing is, I mailed the letter the day he was released....(this was an old friend, not my man)

Well when my guy got out in 2000 my letter actually got forwarded to his parole agent and he received it a week after he was released.

Your letter will be returned to you with N.I.C stamped on it. (not in custody) I can't wait for the day that'll happen cause that means my baby will have been moved to his rehab program, and that means he's one step closer to being back in my arms again.:heart:

Believe it or not my husband was released from Noble CI in Ohio shortly before xmas and the cards from PTO members were forwarded to our home, Crazy huh?
SQ in California returned everything marked paroled. Guess it all depends where you are.

I recieved one letter that was returned to me while he was being transfered from county to prison. They told me over the phone that his mail would be forwarded but that one time it came back here. Upon release, I was told it would be returned to sender.

My man's stuff got forwarded from county jail to prison for three days. Everything else got sent back to me, return to sender.

When my boyfriend left the county jail and was transferred to prison my letters where returned and stamped with - NOT IN CUSTODY.

When I was trying to find T and he was being moved by marshalls, I finally heard he was at high desert in CA. I immediately called, found out I could send paper, stamps, etc. got all those back. they changed his id number and know what? I got things back up to 8 months later! and he was still in doc custody! one had a $30 Mo missing the 8 months!
