Carson City, Nevada-AP -- A nine-month-old shepherd mix is mending at the Nevada State Prison in Carson City after inmates raised money for the dog's surgery.

"Socks One" was among eight puppies who came to the prison in August in a project sponsored by the state prison system and the Nevada Humane Society.

The PUP program, as it's called, has inmates train young dogs to make them more adoptable.

Socks One's inmate trainer, Kenny Hartwell, noticed the dog had trouble getting out of his crate. He was diagnosed with bone spurs, a genetic disorder that required surgery.

Hartwell and other inmates pooled their money and came up with all but 100 dollars needed for the surgery. Warden Mike Budge threw in the rest.

After the operation Tuesday, Socks One is on the mend and back with Hartwell -- but not for long. The inmate says the goal is to find his four-legged friend a good home.

Wow Monica !!! That's such a cute nice story !!!
It reminds me of something. Last summer, I saw a report on TV about French prisons. In one of them, the inmates found in the rec yard a lost kitten. One of the inmate "smuggled" the kitten back to his cell. Which is absolutely forbidden !!! And of course the COs found the kitten !!! Guess what ? They wrote up the inmate for smuggling BUT they let him have the kitten, and each CO gives each month $1 to buy food for the kitten !! :)
Thanks for sharing this story Monica !! :)

This proves that prisoners have hearts... We have always known as the family and friends of these people, but the general public hasnt a clue... I know after 9-11 alot of the guys who were in with Jeff sent as much as they could to the relief efforts... It was'nt much, but every lil bit counts right...

That's so sweet Monica ... thank you for sharing ... there are not enough stories like this that make the media!

Phi ... awwwh, that is so sweet too ... the co's there must really be compassionate to let this fella go ahead and keep the kitten ... and then pay for it's keep! Wow, that really is something!

Stories like this are only part of the reason why I write as many guys as I possibly can -- Big Hearts live behind those walls.

But that lil pup is so lucky to have good people helping him. me and my fiancee love animals and this sound like somethin we'd do.
