My son is awaiting sentencing - he is currently being held in the Otero County Prison in Chaparral, NM. We are thinking that he may end up in LaTuna. Can you tell me what that place is like? He's 22 years old and this will be his first time doing time. Thanks. Nmex 08-29-2004, 12:29 PM Hi mslking There are actually three different facilities; a FCI Low, a Camp, and a Satellite Low, which is kind of a mixture of the Camp and the Low. I was at the Camp for about a year, and its not too bad. Do you know what his security level is? Will he be going to the Low or the Camp? I don't have any firsthand knowledge of the Low, but I was locked up with quite a few guys who were there, and they all said pretty much the same thing... it sucked. But obviously, your not going to find any prison that anyone likes, so I guess it's all relative. His "prison experience" will all have to do with his attitude and the way he carries himself. If you think he is going to the camp, I can give you detailed picture of what life there is like, but if he's going to the FCI, all I can tell you is what I've heard. Let me know if I can help mslking 08-29-2004, 03:54 PM He has mentioned something about "camp". Nmex 08-30-2004, 08:02 AM The camp is okay. When I was there, it was about 75% full. They have a decent rec yard with a good weight pile, tennis courts, basketball and softball as well. The commisary is decent and the living conditions are okay, they have you in 4 man cubicles. There is a UNICOR that warehouses federal law enforcement vechiles. The library is improving all the time. The food isn't all that great, but it's decent and you get plenty of it. All in all, it wasn't that bad. Since it's a camp, they don't have a fence and you get a drivers license to drive around the "reservation". The FCI is next door, and the camp supports the outside grounds and the staff housing.
