Firstly hello.
Ii am a new member here, and here is/are my questions concerning visitation, Im sorry if this has all been covered but I could not find a specific question answered.

I received approval notice in mail from my friend on death row at SQ. I am approved for visit.
-My Questions-
1. Do I have to call san quentin (or dept of corrections) and schedule visits with my friend on DR or does HE have to schedule my visits?
2. Could I hypothetically hop on a plane and show up at the prison on say a thurs through a sat since being an approved visitor could I get a visit THAT day. providing my friend isnt busy with other visitors that day. or does it have to be scheduled by me calling the prison like a month in advance of me being in california.
3. what does the (#) here mean...

and how long can i visit with someone on DR, if i was get to there at say 1:30, could i stay until visiting hours are over, or do i only have like an hour a day?

thank you dearly to anyone who can shed some light, I am in Florida and if I flew out and couldnt visit because something i did not understand I would not be able to make it back out for a very long time to visit again if ever.
I hope to be able to answer these very same questions for someone oneday
thank you.

My friends is on East Block and as well he is a high profile inmate. He has been on death row since 1981. The best suggestions
that I can give you would be to call and make a appointment. Seeing how
you are in Florida, you would be taking a huge jump if you were to fly out
to California in hopes of getting a visit with your friend. Especially on the same
day or a day or two later. There are no garuntee's that you would be able
to see him on a day that you would get to California. An appointment is
usually a garuntee that you will have your visit that day. I am not sure
how long your visits can be for, that is a question to bring up to the Visiting
Sgt when you call. From my understanding you have to call Mondays between
8-10 am. If you should call the 5023 number and no one answers then I would
suggest that you call the main visiting line 415-454-5022, and explain that
no one is answering the other line for DR inmates. But always call first...
I would think it may be a great disappointment for you to show up at the
prison without a visiting appointment. The prison could give 2 chits about
how far you have traveled to see your friend. Hope this helps, but in the meantime welcome to PTO, and if you have any questions feel free to ask,
if I don't have allthe answers you are seeking there are other members here
on this site that can help you too. Suzi

I know this is an older post....but I also have a pen pal/great friend on death row at San Quentin. I was wondering if you have visited yet? And if you have if you don't mind me asking? How was it? I am also planning a trip...just waiting for approval to visit.

Thanks :)

here are your answers to your questions in order:
1. yes at 415-455-5023
2. no. it can take up to 2 months to get approved. its a process we all have to go thru when we visit here in cali's prisons. he needs to send you the form, have you fill it out and mail it back. he'll let you know if and when you get approved.
3. it just means that up to 5 visitors at a time and can visit the condemned inmate.
visits are only 2 hours contact. if you get an appointment time before 12 noon you may get up to 4 hours if its not too many visits that day. they have visits thursday thru sunday but you can only get one weekday and one weekend day visit. so if you visit thursday you cant visit friday, if you visit saturday you cant visit sunday, etc. you have to call 7 days ahead of time for the day you wish to visit at the above number between the hours of 8-10 am pacific time.

my best advice. dont come out here for a visit if youre not approved. have an appointment time scheduled and call the hotline 18003748474 if you have any questions about appropriate attire, etc. good luck.
