About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 1/2 years. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic

He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates:

"It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes . . . so shut your damned mouths."

Yeah.. Thats Joe Arpaio for you.. He is suck a Di**... but what ever.. We are not here to bad mouth people.. I just think he IS inhuman! what ever.. makes me sick to live in Arizona

Well that title got my attention since I live in Phoenix and we have to deal with him on the news in the newspaper all the time. He is a big publicity seeker. I have nothing good to say about this man! NOTHING!

For sometime now, Sheriff Joe has gotten away with MANY things. When he set up tent city, it was a re-election tactic to reach out to the people because this Valley is high in crime rate. He has NO compassion towards the inmates nor could he care less what the public thinks. He has gotten way to big a head for his own good and it is time that he fails at gaining re-election votes. He seeks publicity in every fashion....it makes no difference to him. SHERIFF JOE...YOU MUST GO!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE NOT WANTED HERE ANYMORE.

I recently read that the crime rate has not decreased in Maricopa County since his elections, and that Joe Arpaio has cost the county millions in lawsuits by former inmates.

so is anyone running against him in the next election? I know that he has his bid in already , is anyone standing up to him and if yes dang do not forget to vote against him

i cant stand the sheriff i hope someone else gets elected. better yet i think we should elect this creep to live in the damn tents

I like how he just wasted tax payers money again with his blotched prostitution bust.I think the officers that engaged in sex with the prostitutes should be charged as Johns!

doesnt it seem like good O Joe makes up his own laws? How is it that he gets away with breaking so many laws? He thinks he is above the law or he thinks he is the law? He needs to GO! As many laws as he has broke he should be sitting in prison somewhere on level 5!

You mean to tell me that Cops sleep with prositiutes and then bust them. Sorry i am from South Africa and was just wondering if that is how they do their busts. I hold a inhouse meeting at my home every week for sex workers to teach them about aids and STD's and do it in conjunction with the police. We also give them photos of who to look out for. Although it is illegal in SA the police do not harrass these girls. Sorry i know it off the subject but i was just wondering?

PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County prosecutor's office has rejected about 60 prostitution cases forwarded by the sheriff's department.


The county attorney's spokesman says it's because of the way some undercover deputies and volunteer posse members behaved.


According to Bill FitzGerald, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, about six deputies and posse members engaged in nudity, oral sex and other sexual contact during a prostitution sting carried out between September and November.


He says the techniques, which deviated from standard investigative practices, reduced the likelihood of a conviction.


Sheriff Joe Arpaio has said in the past that detectives working undercover in the prostitution sting had his approval to disrobe in the company of the women they were investigating.

The people voted him into office, now we need to VOTE HIM OUT, he makes his own laws and gets away with it, he has animals in air conditioned bulidings but humans suffering in the heat, I am not saying the animals should suffer but doing the time is payment for the crime, should they risk having heat strokes?

My Opinion ... there are a huge block of elderly voters in SUn City who will vote for Sherriff Joe to be re-elected. The rest of the valley has a pathetic turnout for elections and will be lucky if 1 person in 1000 actually votes. Voting sites will be empty on election day. While in Sun City the very old and ultra conservative voters show up to vote and will have to wait in line to cast their vote for Joe because the voting sites will be packed. Joe will win because of voter apathy.

Thank God I don't live there anymore. It's really sad that as bad as Arizona's prisons are, inmates can't wait to go to a state facility to get away from Sheriff Joke's jails. The guy is so crooked and I pray to God that the FBI starts investgating his department. God most of the cops in his department only have a GED. This is the only place in the country where I've seen that. You're right about the Sun City crowd. They're ultraconservative and mean-spirted. It's too bad that Tim Salmon didn't get elected instead of Queen Janet. Nobody wants to run againist Sherrif Joke because he uses his department to illegally harass anyone who dares to run. I don't think he'll ever be removed via a election. I believe the route to go is to get the feds to take him down. :mad:

Wow and i thought SA was corrupt, just goes to show, we are not the only place in the world that this happens. Some of our Police dont even have an education let alone a drivers liscence.

Sheriff Joe is in serious trouble and may not survive the primary. The Republicans won't endorse him because of his support for Queen Janet in her election plus the whole prostitution sting debacle.
