ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS

The Secretary

The Secretary of the Department of Corrections is a cabinet-level position appointed by the Governor to administer state adult correction facilities, community supervision programs, and correctional industries.

The Secretary serves on the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, the Sentencing Guidelines Commission, and the Correctional Industries Board, and the Washington State Law and Justice Advisory Council.

Prisons Division

The Prisons Division is responsible for the operation of all adult correctional facilities. The Prisons Division is headed by the Deputy Secretary - Prisons Division.

Community Corrections Division

The Community Corrections Division is responsible for offenders in the community who have been released from prison or who are ordered to by supervised by a court of law. The Community Corrections Division is headed by the Deputy Secretary - Community Corrections Division.

Administrative Services Division

The Administrative Services Division provides administrative and support services to the entire Department of Corrections. The Administrative Services Division is headed by the Deputy Secretary - Administrative Services Division.

Mission Statement

The Department of Corrections in collaboration with its criminal justice partners, victims, citizens, and other stakeholders will enhance community safety by holding offenders accountable through the administration of criminal sanctions and effective correctional programs.

The Department employs over 8,000 men and women to administer and supervise over 17,000 offenders housed in 15 institutions and 15 work release facilities. In addition, there are over 44,000 offender field cases, of which over 28,000 are supervised offenders in the community. In 2003, DOC began renting beds in local jails and other jurisdictions to address the state’s bed capacity shortfall. DOC currently rents 987 beds from other jurisdictions.
