RobinP4 05-29-2004, 06:17 PM Hi;
My husband is in Waupun. Your question is, when can they get jobs inside the prison? My husband got one right away when he got there. Let me know if you have any other questions. Waupun is not bad considering it's a prison at least my husband doesn't complain, he's been in for 14 years so we are just use to it and pour all our energy into his case.
ToughTimes 05-29-2004, 10:26 PM Are you talking about Waupun Correctional or Dodge Correctional (also in Waupun)? WCI is a maximum security prison. No one is allowed to ever leave that place for a job, except for inside the walls. My guy was there for a number of years, and it wasn't that bad. However, it has gotten a little worse for VISITING since he left there. I don't know what it's like anymore since he left. However, he is NOW at DCI and he got a job right away and works hard 8+ hours a day. It keeps him busy and he's doing awesome in there. Most inmates in any prison can handle themselves just fine in prison. My guy is actually fine in there - he gets along well with most of the guys, works hard, works out a lot, and spends a lot of time working on laws and cases and things like that. He'll be fine, don't worry! I don't come on this site too much anymore, but feel free to PM me with questions. It might take me awhile to respond though. :D
lmjinwi 05-31-2004, 12:22 PM My dad has been at Waupun for four years now. It's decent there, he works and spends time in the law library and rec, just keeps busy. It's not a bad place to be, some jerks there but you get that anywhere you go. He's waiting for the bus to go to medium and is looking forward to it but like I said Waupun isn't bad.
Feel free to PM me with any questions you might have.
Take care and hang in there.
theredhead 05-31-2004, 01:41 PM That is really good news about your dad!! :-)) Going to lesser security is a real positive thing :-) I am happy for you guys!! :-))
KissyMissy74 05-31-2004, 10:12 PM You can PM me with specific questions if you'd like. My b-friend is there.
He can get a job inside, but you have to put your name on a list. Pay is minimal, but it gets them out of their cell.
KissyMissy74 05-31-2004, 10:18 PM General info about Waupun:
1) visiting- hours 12:30pm -8 pm, 3 hour visits, once on Sat OR Sun and I think up to 3 during the weekdays. Dress code enforced and only 3 chances to clear the metal detector.
Sign in process: go to the desk inside to the left when you enter, fill out slip with only the offenders name (last name first, first name last), list WCI as the institution and the date you are visiting, then below that, ONLY list your name and relationship. I don't have kids, but I think the kids are listed at the bottom and you may need to add their DOB. There's a HUGE sign at the desk to hel.
If you put your address and DOB down, they will give it back to you to redo it. Then put your slip and your ID in the allotted bins by the guard desk and then sign in again there. Give them all the info listed on that one, INCLUDING your address.
Then wait for them to put your ID in the third bin, lock up all your stuff and wait for them to call you to clear the metal detector.
2) As of June 1, 2004 they are enforcing the no personal checks rule. So only money orders, made out to the offender, don't forget their DOC #
3) Phones: 30 minute calls, about $8 from there to Milwaukee. Times of day vary. They cut out at 8pm no matter what.
Let me know if you need more info.
gonzi 06-10-2004, 11:08 AM Thank you all for your help. Sorry it took me so long to answer, I am new at all this site stuff. I hope all of your loved ones are doing well also. I am trying to connect with someone who lives near the center of wisconsin and has a loved one in waupun, thought maybe we could get together for support or car pooling. Thanks.
