Bill called a little while ago and said that the rumor mill in Muskegon is saying that Engler is going to give "a day for a day" before he leaves office because of the prison overcrowding here in Michigan. He wanted me to post this and ask if any of you have heard anything or if your loved one has said if they've heard this? I can't see Engler doing it myself.

Say what??? How cool would that be? I haven't heard of this, but I was wondering if anything would happen with Engler leaving office and Granholm moving in. That would be awesome-but I don't think it would effect my b/f. He is in a camp where the program is 6 months long, period. But, who knows? Hope and pray!!! :)

Wouldn't that be AWESOME!!! I don't think Engler has it in him though. His mantra's always been "more prisons"--yeah that'll fix everything. And Posthumus came right out and said prisoners shouldn't get parole. I would be so shocked and elated.
My bf would've mentioned if he'd heard anything, and I'm not going to bring it up to him cause he gets his hopes up so easily.
Keeping all my fingers and toes crossed...

Ok I dont mean to be daft, but being from Canada I dont know what you mean by day for a day, and if it happened would it affect parole violators ? (since they are a large population in Michigan prisons),,,I can't mention this to James either cause he would get too excited and I dont want him to get let down.

witchinblue--

day for a day--means that they do 1 day and get 1 day good time-----it can end up being they do half the time and then get out.

Deb- Jack called and told me of it the beginning of the week. He told me not to get my hopes up of course but he did tell me of the mentioning of it.... Where do we stand right now on that occurring?

I have no clue where it stands. All I know is what Bill told me and he asked me to put it on here to see if anyone else had heard anything. I'm not going to hold my breathe. Engler isn't that kind of person--I don't think. It would be incredible though!

whether Engler will do this or not but traditionally a lame duck can't get much accomplished. It would be wonderful if it was true though.. I posted this message already and it went to its own topic ... Not sure what I did wrong...

Have a good one!

Not day for a day---but did anyone see in the papers today that our state is looking at early release for some inmates due to overcrowding? Nothing's been decided, but when you look at the stats, the $ deficit, and the bed space etc... as the papers say something has to happen and this is an option they're looking at. Unfortunately, many of the republicans are against it.

which paper was that in Deb ?

It's in the Sault Michigan paper, but it's a column by Malcolm Johnson--an Associated Press Writer from Lansing--so it's out of Lansing. You could try the web site for the Lansing State Journal or the Detroit Free Press.

Hi Deb, This is Audrey, and yes, it has been in the Muskegon paper down here too on the early release. They say 1200 or more will be released early due to the overcrowding, and building a new facility is not an option because of the 1.5 million that Engler spent on that other prison a couple of years ago!! Any way, I finally got registered, and am here now, but not sure how this works.....

Oh please let it be true! I don't know if it would effect Robert or not, (it should) but if it will effect other families out there, I am all for it. It is time to stop locking up parole violators for crimes that aren't even crimes! It's time to let out people who are way past their parole dates, who have done nothing but there time! God, I really hope Granholm does something positive for us. I have already emailed her! (no, I don't think she is going to get it- LOL!)
God, this is a long time coming! (If it actually comes)

HI,
Up here in Canada there was something on the news about the over crowding in prisons in the U.S. and they said that 6 prisoners were released today early without a parole hearing in Michigan. I only caught part of the report cause I was working but does anyone in Michigan know anything about this ?

Hi, witchlin! That's interesting...I can't imagine anything in the system moves fast enough that they'd already be doing early releases but it'd be great news if they were.

I do know that even before early release was ever on the table, if your parole guideline score is high enough (+4 or higher) you don't have to see the board--the board can just grant it. This can also work the other way, too--if your score is very low (-13 or lower) they can flop you without a hearing. More info on that is at
http://www.michigan.gov/corrections/0,1607,7-119-1435-22909--,00.html

I've never been able to find the exact formula for parole scoring in Michigan though...if you ever come across it I'd love to see that.

The guidelines for that early release are in the article at http://www.michigan.gov/corrections/0,1607,7-119--58729--,00.html
If I'm reading it right, it won't save any prisoner more than 90 days. But hey, I won't be complaining if it works out to get my boyfriend out 90 days early!

Well the latest is his bunkie got a letter from the parole board and got released the other day, his date for earliest release was not for a couple of months if he got parole. So he didnt even see the parole board and this has got me really anxious that there may be so good news for some of us. Especially our loved ones. Well I'm trying not to get to excited but I can't help thinking that this is a real possibility that James may be coming home and early too. He is suppose to get his notice of a parole hearing any day now and Im hoping its going to just be a letter that he has parole instead of a hearing. James said that if you get that letter, they have to release you within 30 days of its date, Im not sure it that is true or not. I think there are so many rumours going around in there now that facts are starting to get altered.

Wow- how great would that be? Robert has still not gotten his written documentation of his next parole, but he talked to someone AGAIN just the other day, and it still says Sept. 01. So why hasn't he gotten the documentation? If it's already on the computer, what's the hold up? He has been waiting for a little over 6 weeks for the response, and the response has been on the computer for about 4 weeks. So, what's the hold up? I still believe that they are re-considering ALOT of paroles now, and maybe that's why he hasn't gotten the actual documentation. But, I don't want to get my hopes up either. (even though that is SO hard) Either way, I hope that we hear something soon!

Just to let you know--one of the guy's in with Bill was flopped for another year in September ---and then got a letter from the parole board this week giving him his "go home within 30 days" news. He's a very happy camper. Things are happening.....

We're still waiting on Robert's parole papers to come through. Even though on the computer it says Sept. 01, I won't actually beieve that until he gets it in writing. Of course the longer it takes for him to get the paperwork, the more I think they are re-thinking his case. BUT, I will NOT get my hopes up! (yea, right) So, I will let you all know when he receives them. It has been about a month since the "decision" has been on the computer, without actual documentation yet. So, we wait. I am so happy for Bill's celllie thought. I mean, how awesome for him!!! I told Robert about that, and he seemed to be interested, but, he doesn't think anything good is coming his way. But, we will wait and see. PTO position assumed! :)

Could you ask bill if he has any idea what that guy did to get in and stuff like that as far as his getting out went. since bill is across the street from lee, i am curious as to the small possibilty even what all it has to do with. Thanks!!
