Phil in Paris 05-21-2004, 06:30 AM No !!!!! Don't bring me my coldie now, I'm wearing my cozzie, and I'm cracking a fat !!! :D :D :p
Phil
LMAO@Phil... sad thing is... ummm I understood every word. Call is Aussie 101 :)
a.lil.love 05-21-2004, 06:11 PM I looked it up just to see what the hell Phil said. The coldie part was obvious. But "crackin a fat" LOL.. Phil: Too Much Information!!!!!!!
Tha'ts funny though, I have to tell my man. That will be fun!!
Rostonhall 05-23-2004, 12:30 PM Oh Dear, Phil, I also understood every word!! I thought I'd have forgotten nearly everything I've been away from Oz so long.
Kyla, it's funny you should start this thread because in the Illinois forum we've been talking about English slang. I've just sent Tony a couple of books on slang and the Cockney Rhyming slang (which my family use a lot) because he has soooo much trouble understanding.

Im reading something now on my cigarette pack, they are stating Aussie slang
Thats what gave me the idea, this one is the Thong, and I was talking to someone in the US, and they said something about someone sending them "thongs" and Im thinking HOW UNROMANTIC. It took me about a half hour listening, for me to get up the courage to say to them that about there partner, and realized it was a g string.
Ok THE THONG IN AUSTRALIA is a pair of rubber thongs FOR THE FEET!!
Rostonhall 05-24-2004, 09:17 AM Yes, that was one I had to learn when I got to Brisbane. Thong in England is the g-string and I was very confused to first!! Another one that really had me wide-mouthed, although it's not slang, was when I first started work on the offices of David Jones in the Valley. Someone screamed out 'Pass the Durex', and I thought 'what the hell have I come to.' Durex here is the brand name of a condom, not sticky tape as in Oz!!!

oz ex-prisoner 05-28-2004, 03:45 PM Ah ... but there is aussie slang and then . . . there's prison slang! Have to hit the frog and toad cause I gotta get on the Al Capone to give me free-wheeler a call. Then the screws can put me in my slot where I will stretch out in the fart sack and watch a bit of the idiot box before I catch up on my zeds. Loosely interpretated: I have to hit the frog and toad (frog and toad = road = have to go) cause I gotta get on the Al Capone (phone) and give my free-wheeler (sheila = girlfriend) a call. Then the screws (prison guards) can put me in my slot (cell) where I will stretch out in the fart sack (bed) and watch a bit of the idiot box (television) before I catch up on my zeds (zzzzz = sleep). cheers all
jalbru 06-15-2004, 06:56 AM Hey Everyone
I just got a letter from my penpal where he asked me what does "arvo" mean?
He said he couldn't find it in the dictionary :)
So here we go for aussie slang "arvo" = "afternoon"
sometimes i have cracked up because he didn't understand what i wrote and misinterpreted it, but then again he has written somethings that make me have that blank look on my face
So i guess it goes both ways with the slang!
Cheers
Jalbru, you shouldnt use the term "cracked up" cause Phil will take it in another way.... ummm cracked up means laughing.. LMAO.
I printed that out and sent that to my friend, and he said he hadnt laughed that hard in ages, and neither had anyone on his floor, as he was reading it off.
jalbru 06-16-2004, 12:36 AM Hey Kyla
Oh boy :D I didn't even think about that :) Well for starters i would need the proper equipment for that one!!!!!!
Another one is Crack a s**t = chuck a tanny = Don't get upset!
And i like this one to describe someone that you cant remember their name or their name is not worth remembering - "Old Mate"
Cheers - later - have a good one - Catch ya :)
LMAO!!!
My niece spent some time as a student in Australia and came back talking all kinds of jibberish!!! Took us forever to break her of it!!
Thanks Kyla!!

Jalbru if you want me to print it out and post it to you, PM me your addy, and I will pop it in the post.
JJT,,,,, I was the opposite in the US.. I had them all taking aussie, like we say alot "get stuffed" meaning the rude .....well you will get it. My mother in law thought that was really cool, and still uses it today :) Nice and polite us aussies :)
Rostonhall 06-16-2004, 12:22 PM So much of Aussie slang is the same here. I wonder who started it first!! Cracked up and Get Stuffed have been used here since Noah was a lad.
