We are writing as concerned family members and loved ones of men incarcerated at Pelican Bay Security Housing Unit ( SHU ). Please hear our voices and hearts.
We use the term men because they are human beings. Contrary to what some people may think, the men we refer to are proud, God-fearing, compassionate, and family-oriented not hardened convicts! These men, our husbands, fathers, brothers, uncles and best friends, all deserve an opportunity to be treated fairly, regardless of CDC s scheme to continually generate money by not paroling or sentencing them to indeterminate SHU terms.
In the CDC Title 15 Policy Handbook, a matrix details the amount of SHU time that can be served, based on the actual crime. However, if they believe an inmate might have the potential to possibly influence another inmate, or if they happen to be seen together, then they could be sentenced to SHU indeterminately, just by association. This is unjust, unconstitutional and illegal.
The CDC will quote statistics and random incidents to justify their actions, but the truth is they are attempting to punish beyond any scope of the imagination. The mere fact that these men have survived this long in SHU (some as long as 30 years), while still maintaining their sanity and some compassion, has CDC in a state of confusion. Therefore, to further justify their actions, they deliver rhetoric to the public, when knowing all along that the public outcry will diminish, and Pelican Bay is remotely too far away for anyone to take notice.
When we inquire about the possibility of them moving from isolation and windowless cages into the general population, CDC tells us, SHU must first program and then they can move out of SHU. This all translates to debriefing, which is another term for ratting, finking, or blackballing another inmate. They are literally between a rock and a hard place!
Some men have become so desperate; they create stories to become released from this horrible existence. They are promised things that may or may not come to fruition. It s a bad practice and CDC will have new problems since they must now have facilities to just house the debriefers. Something must change
If you could see our men in all their valor, taking steps each day to improve their self-esteem, and making positive contributions to society and the lives of their loved ones. How can they be called the worse of the worst? We love them. We respect them. We care about them. We call them our heroes.
Thank you for listening.
