Folsom Prison BluesJohnny CashG
I hear the train acoming it's rolling round the bend

and I ain't seen the sunshine sine I don't know when

I'm stuck at Folsom Prison and time keeps draggin' on
D7 G
But that train keeps rollin' on down to San AntoneG
When I was just a baby my Mama told me 'Son
G7
always be a good boy; don't ever play with guns.
C G
But I shot the man in Reno, just to watch him die
D7 G
when I hear that whistle blowin' I hang my head and cry

Although Johhny Cash never served time but had the reputation that he did. Merle Haggard actually was in prsion when Cash played for them. Cash would give concerts at several different prisons.

Has there been any other entertainer that has done such a thing? Cash had a hard time getting his manager to let him do this much less record a live record from Folsom.

Do we know if Johhny Cash is still an activist? Any knew news about him on this suject?

Man, does that cause flashbacks! LOL I grew up on ol' johnny & willie & merl. You'd have to have some goat-ropin' parents like mine to truly appreciate those lyrics.
Soraya, that is some classic country. I'm sure if you start looking you will find a site from which you can listen to such music. Some of it is good & some is just goofy! Have fun looking!
As far as him being an activist I never knew he was i the first place! What can you tell me?

I love this song! My parents used to have this record (plus a few 8 tracks) and the records of Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Conway and Loretta, Willie Nelson, and others -
I think Johnny Cash's health has been bad - seems I heard he's been dealing with chronic pneumonia. I'll try to check and see.

I did time at Old Folsom (yes there is a new Folsom) a few years ago. It's an old stone prison very imposing. Looks like something out of a 50s prison movie. It use to be a very violent place. The movie American Me was set at Old Folsom. When CDC took back the prisons from the gangs back in the mid to late 80s, Old Folsom was classified as a level 1 & 2 prison (level 1 is minimum security). All the violent guys are now at new Folsom which is a level 4. If I remember correctly San Quentin was Calif's first prison & Old Folsom was it's second. It's over a hundred years old & looks it, LOL. Cold in the winter & hot & humid as hell in the summer. Your right Johnny Cash never did time there, he only performed there. Merle Haggard did do time there & thats where he saw Johnny Cash play.--------Ken

I am a Johnny Cash fan. I just saw the movie about him. "Walk the Line" Johnny Cash died this year about 5 months after his wife June Carter Cash.

I knew when we lost June that Johnny would not be with us too much longer... My mom got me hooked on Cash and the Carter Family when I was just a little thing.... I was driving along I-90 when I heard about Johnny Cash's death and had to pull over because driving and weeping are such incompatible activities....Cop pulled over and asked if everything was all right... I said "No, Johnny Cash just died" , the cop looked stunned for a moment, then started singing "Folsom Prison Blues" real soft with tears in his eyes....we must have sat there on the shoulder for half an hour.

Since you are talking about country singers and prison, did you know David Allen Coe was actually on death row in the seventies! his sentence was commuted, then he was given clemency. I heard him tell the story on one of his older CD's.

''Walk the Line'' was an excellent film the best film I have seen all of 2005 in my opinion. Not that I have seen many films in the theatre this year but the few I have this is the Best one! Johnny Cash was awesome! He had a lot of heart and dealt with a lot of pain but he was strong enough to always bounce back from it. I really love that folsum prison song too it is pretty good. The movie made me cry 3 times because I felt like it was my man,Jeremy, had dealt with a lot fo same pain in his life that Johnny dealt with.
