Visitor Identification

When visitors arrive at the visiting reception area, they will need to show a current photo identification; such as a drivers license, military id or passport. Parents of visiting minors younger than 16 years need to bring the minor's birth certificate or Social Security card.

Appropriate Clothing

A good rule to follow is to wear conservative, conventional clothing, something that is not suggestive or skimpy.

Visitors may NOT wear blue denim or any other clothing that is similar to inmate attire.

Gang related clothing is not permitted.

A visitor's dress length or shorts cannot be shorter than two (2) inches above mid knee. Wrap around skirts, halter tops, see through clothing and hats are not permitted. All visitors must wear under garments. Women must wear a bra, but should not wear an underwire bra, as it may set off the metal detector.

(http://159.121.112.28/institutions/osp/visiting.htm#top)Clothing Hints

New visitors should bring an extra set of clothing just to be sure that they will be allowed into the institution. Visitors can store unused clothing in their vehicles or rent a locker for .25 cents.
All visitors must walk through a metal detector. Avoid wearing metal as much as possible. Metal buttons, jewelry, underwire bras and many styles of dress shoes will trigger the metal detector.

(http://159.121.112.28/institutions/osp/visiting.htm#top)Bringing Children to a Visit

A letter of custodial consent will be mailed to you for all minor children who you want included in your visit. You will need to sign and mail the letter to the institution before the children may visit. All minor children, except emancipated minors, must be accompanied by an approved adult visitor.

An inmate may have a total of four visitors at one time, including children, but there must be at least one adult in the visiting party.

An indoor play area is available for children in the O.S.P. visiting room. All children using the play area must be supervised by the inmate. Visitors are allowed to bring a clear bottle of infant formula, two diapers and a single layer blanket for infants that accompany a visit.

(http://159.121.112.28/institutions/osp/visiting.htm#top)Physical Contact with an Inmate

Visitors and inmates are allowed to briefly kiss and embrace at the beginning and end of each visit. Holding hands is the only physical contact allowed during the visit. Excessive physical contact is grounds for terminating the visit.
Visitors and inmates must sit across from one another with a small table separating them.

(http://159.121.112.28/institutions/osp/visiting.htm#top)CourtesySince visitors come to the prison to visit with loved ones, becoming involved in other visits beyond a brief greeting is not allowed. (http://159.121.112.28/institutions/osp/visiting.htm#top)Rest RoomsRest rooms in the visiting room are for the use of visitors only (http://159.121.112.28/institutions/osp/visiting.htm#top)Vending Machines

Money is not allowed in the O.S.P. visiting room. O.S.P. has change machines in the visiting reception area to convert money to tokens. The largest denomination these change machines accept is a five dollar bill. A maximum of ten dollars in tokens may be taken into the visiting room.
Inmates may eat snacks purchased from the vending machines, but only visitors may actually approach or use the machines. All items purchased must be consumed or disposed of prior to leaving the visiting room.

(http://159.121.112.28/institutions/osp/visiting.htm#top)Monitoring of Visits

Visits will be monitored by staff, and in some cases, by video camera. Staff may deny or stop visits when they have reason to believe thtat the safety or security of the institution may be jeopardized. It is important that visitors comply with all rules and staff instructions. Exercise reasonable care, common sense and good judgement in all that you do while visiting.

Point System

All inmates are allowed 24 visiting points per month. Each individual visit deducts points from the total allowance, including children.
Weekend and holiday visits deduct two points per person. A visitor may visit only once per day on a weekend or holiday; during the morning or afternoon session, but not both. Weekday visits deduct one point per person per visiting session. A visitor may visit during both morning and afternoon sessions on the same day, if desired and points allow.

Breadon, you got it right. Just show up with "Casual Sunday" clothing and an ID for each person and you're all set to go in.

My son was moved a couple of weeks ago to Santiam Correctional Facility. I believe all of the visiting rules apply the same throughout the Oregon System?
We are still waiting for the final approval for visitation. It has been a month now. But, I think maybe it's taking longer because he was at Wilsonville 3 weeks, OSP 2 1/2 weeks or longer now he has been at Santiam Correctional for I think 2 weeks or 3. Sometimes the time just gets away from me. In the meantime his daughter is very anxiously waiting to visit her Dad!

I just got word that my husband was transferred to OSP. Still no word on "why" , He had been working on trying to get work release... maybe they have a program up at Salem? Just got to wait and see what's going on, I guess. :/

He was minimum classification, but he's in the regular OSP, but in the dorms, so the officer didn't think he was transferred because of a fight or something like that...

Anyone else got a loved one there?

Welcome Calieast,

I have a good friend that is in OSP. My friend is in Min. He has been there since July 07. He has 4 years, 1 month and 23 days left.

Prison is prison so it's not easy. OSP from what I hear is not as bad as others.

If there is anything I can help you with, let me know.:)

Hi Lisa! i really appreciate your response... this is a first for him and it was somewhat unexpected... my family is worried because we don't really know what to expect... I've read a few posts on here about visiting and such which is really helpful...

One of the things I learned from my prisoner friend is that there are some really ridiculous rules for the prisoners who receive visits and violation of any of these rules results in them being strip searched. Things like bending over too far to pick up something that is dropped or squatting down while having a photo taken. There are many indignaties prisoners have to go through, but this has to be among the worst. Does anyone have an offical set of rules that relate to prisoners on these visits so we do not accidently trigger such a response?

Zelda50

Actually, the prison staff can strip search inmates going into or out of the visiting room for no reason, if they wish. The Administrative Rules, I believe, apply to both visitors and inmates. There are no special ones, that I know of, just for the inmates. Z.

It looks like my man is going to be sent to OSP in the next month or so from TRCI. He just got word from one of the Captain's that the request has been received and that it's looking really good. He could be sent out there as soon as 2 weeks from now.
I'm used to all the TRCI rules, visiting stuff, phone and yard times... but know nothing about OSP yet. Ack!
Once he officially gets there, I am planning to move the 4 hours from Seattle to Salem and get a place closer to him.
Does anyone know what areas would be the best to live in, but still under a 45 minute drive time from there?

Thanks!

That's great news! Good luck on the transfer. I know there are a lot of us that wish our loved ones could get moved to the valley. Does he have any special circumstances that warrant him being moved? There are a lot more activities and work opportunities for them at OSP. And visiting is 7 days a week.

Portland, which is where you'll find most of the jobs, is about an hour from Salem. Do your research on the schools as they have some great ones and some poor ones. Lake Oswego and Beaverton are suburbs of PDX that have good schools. Tualitin and Wilsonville are the Portland suburbs that are closest to Salem.
Eugene/Springfield is also about an hour away. The job market there is not too good, but the quality of life is high and Eugene has great schools. Very liberal community and lots of nice subsidized housing for lower income folks.
I guess it depends on what is important to you to determine where the best place to live is, but IMHO, Portland, Eugene and Bend are the best cities in Oregon to live in.

Well, luckily for me, I am blessed, and finding a job is not something I need to worry about. I currently telecommute from home for my company (after working towards that privelege for over a year!!!) and can continue to do so when I move! It makes things a WHOLE lot easier.

My main concerns are finding somewhere with a good school (as my son will be starting kindergarten in this year!) and somewhere that is safe for us. Also... of course, I would like to be within an hour of the prison, so that weekly visits will not be a problem!

Thank you so much for all your advice!!! :D

Oh and as far as "special circumstances" go... his "mother institution" is OSP. He was there for a few years before he go shipped to TRCO to do some hole time. He unfortunately continued to get in trouble, so they never transferred him back (He's been at Two Rivers for a little over a year and a half now). He now had 6 months clear conduct and just made his level 2 back (YAY!), so he has been working with two of the Captains to get back to OSP, and they recognize that being there would benefit him (his family lives in McMinnville). So... yay for decent people that work for the prison system. They're not all bad!

I think McMinnville would be a nice place to live!! If you want a small community, I would suggest there - or Dallas, Oregon - or Independence (if you want a really small place) Eugene is about a 1 hour, 15 minute drive from Salem and is a nice place to live but housing costs are high.

I talked to the Captain over at OSP yesterday and he gave me the thumbs up that my honey would FOR SURE be headed over there... of course he couldn't tell me when, because of security reasons, but it's looking like it should be soon. I'm headed down to Carlton and McMinnville to visit with his family this weekend (and it's his daughter's birthday!), and will be checking out places around there, and in Salem.

My brother has been at OSP for about a month now, it's his first time and he is looking at staying there for about a year. I think his is at the minimum facility,he says that he is doing ok, I can't visit him yet, I just put my visiting application in Nov. and they told him that it will take about 6 to 8 weeks to be processed. Can someone that has a love one there please share how is been for you and your love one so far. Any information will be helpful, if you have tips on visitations please share. Thank you.
