With little discussion, the state Senate rejected legislation Monday that would give some habitual offenders a shot at freedom.

No one took the Senate floor to denounce the proposal, House Bill 543 by state Rep. Patricia Smith, D-Baton Rouge.

Instead, debate centered on two senators’ attempts to assure their colleagues that the bill would not make them soft on crime.

mzwilliams2011 this bill was aimed at lifers in Angola. This bill would have given them a second chance at freedom given that they would have rehabilitated themselves through various programs and work training. The bill made alot of sense simply because why would the state put out all this money to provide a degree to an inmate that will never walk the streets again when they can simply put the money into a petty criminal that in and out of prison...Im sorry that this particular bill failed:(
