I am in touch with a man at Neal Unit in Amarillo. He and about 30 other inmates are being denied their rights to do the sweat lodge and other activities. Ceremonial items have been siezed. I-60's filed, cases filed in return and I don't know how to help. Is there a place where such inmates can write with such problems? Many tribes are represented there and I would appreciate some information.
Thanks, Ohara

My friend got what he believes is the first sweatlodge in a Texas Prison at Newton Correctional Facility, a privated prison contracted by Arizona. He got a little help from NAPS:
http://www.hri.ca/partners/naps/. He was pretty persistent in repeatedly contacting the prison chaplain. AZ also legislates that Native Americans must be provided with the right to worship. They bought their own ceremonial items or people donated them through the chaplain and built the sweatlodge themselves.

I was just veiwing a Native activist site last week. If I can retrace the site I will post it here for you.
This is awful. Do you have any information about why? Do you know who the Chaplan is? Mr. Teel?
