SC to execute death row inmate on May 28th---James Neil Tucker (SC DOC)
The South Carolina Supreme Court on Thursday set the date of execution for
death row inmate James Neil Tucker.
The 47-year-old Tucker will be put to death on Friday, May 28th.
Tucker was sentenced to death in Sumter County for the July 25, 1992,
murder of Rosa Lee "Dolly" Oakley. He was also sentenced to death in
Calhoun County for the July 1, 1992 murder of Shannon Mellon.
On Monday the United States Supreme Court declined to hear Tucker's case
on appeal. On Wednesday, Tucker's attorneys (upon his request) abandoned
appeals filed with the State Supreme Court and in Richland County and
asked the court to set an execution date.
According to the South Carolina Attorney General's office, Oakley was in
her yard on June 25th, 1992, when Tucker pulled his car into her driveway,
pulled out a gun and forced her into her bedroom. 2 witnesses arrived
looking for Oakley's husband, then fled the scene.
Tucker then took $14 from her purse, shot her in the head at close range
twice and fled.
While on the run from police, the AG's Tucker broke into the Calhoun
County home of Shannon Mellon, woke her, bound her hands and feet, took
$20 from her purse, shot her 3 times, dragged her body into the woods and
then stole her car.
He was apprehended on July 10th, 1992, in Maggie Valley, North Carolina.
