A convicted sex offender is dead after an altercation at a Fayette County prison.
The Mount Olive Correctional Facility houses some of the state's most violent criminals.
Last night, violence ignited inside the prison, with a rec-yard fight that left one prisoner dead.
One Mount Olive inmate is dead and at least one other may face murder charges after a deadly fight in the maximum security prisons recreation yard.
The victim, 38 year old Kevin Paul Deuley of Buchannon, was serving five consecutive sentences after being convicted in 1989.
"Of course, the State Police are investigating, and once they get their investigation completed, they'll take the proper steps as far as what procedures they will do, as far as signing warrants, or possibly indicting the suspects," said Thomas McBride, Mount Olive Warden.
McBride says the victim was struck with a blunt object and stabbed several times.
"The inmate that has expired was sent to the State Medical Examiners Office, and at this point we don't know what the exact cause of death is. We'll be able to know more back form the State Medical Examiner," said Thomas McBride, Mount Olive Warden.
Mount Olive opened in 1995. The facility houses mostly men who commit violent crimes in West Virginia. But, despite the violent nature of the inmates, the warden says this is the first murder in his two years on the job.
"Being a maximum security, you know, there's nothing that is a surprise. We try to keep everything, we do at a good tempo. And generally the inmates are not a whole lot of problems, I mean, it is a maximum security prison you know," said Thomas McBride, Mount Olive Warden.
The State Police and the Department of Corrections are investigating the murder and expect toe identify one of more suspects within the week and during that investigation, the prison will remain in a lock down.
"It will remain until we are satisfied that things are secure in the institution," said Thomas McBride, Mount Olive Warden.
