I have a son at Oakdale. Things were initially not good there, but in my limited experience, prison doesn't seem to be good anywhere. From my understanding the food at Oakdale (compared with other facilities) is really bad. The best meal of the day is lunch as this is when the prison has visitors and administration is worried about putting on the dog and pony show for outside guests (inmates need to have money to procure food from the commissary). Also, there are some youthful guards that seem to enjoy the power their job affords and can be quite difficult with the inmates -- though I doubt this is much different anywhere else. The other downside for our family is that this institution is not close to home and we are limited on our ability to visit -- we hope over the long haul to get this remedied. There are very little activities for the inmates to get involved with other than isolation or gang activity -- there are a couple of powerful gangs/groups that are dangerous and any inmate entering this facility should be very careful of their associations so as not to be construed as "birds of a feather flock together". Other than that, the climate is muggy & humid and the bugs are BIG! Oops...almost forgot, it is rumored that this facility is changing from its current medium security level status to low sometime toward October 2004. This means that many inmates will either be moved on to other medium level facilities or their classifications changed low. Sorry it seems I've rambled on and on. Hope this helps! Our family goes on like everyone else -- taking one day at a time and praying for the day when we are finished dealing and struggling with the system.

As a side note: Everyone needs to read H.R. Bill 4036 that Congressman Davis submitted. It's goal is to reinstate the system of parole for Federal inmates. Write your congressman! Get involved...we can make this happen.
