MCI-Shirley Medium is located approximately forty-two miles northwest of Boston on the Shirley/Lancaster line. The facility maintains twelve inmate housing units, a twenty-eight bed Health Service Unit (hospital), fifty-nine bed segregation Unit, gym, recreation areas, school, church, industries, laundry, vocational, food service building, visiting building and the programs building.

There are currently 436 inmate work assignments at the Medium in the following categories: Janitorial, Canteen, Housemen, Property, Walks and Grounds, Food Service Department, Inmate Clerks (Library, School, Clergy, Vocational, Computer Lab), Maintenance, Gym, Health Service Orderly, Laundry, Warehouse, Carpentry, Computers for Schools, Industries, Community Work Crews and grounds crews.

The Furniture Shop at Shirley Medium has thirteen inmates working in a complete wood and laminate furniture manufacturing plant. These workers are trained on woodworking equipment and produce an extensive product line of furniture. Lumber is transformed into quality furniture exposing the workers to a trade, which is in high demand in the Commonwealth.
