Hi all fellow Iowans!! I thought a new thread on this subject would be better so it dont get lost in the shuffle. Ok, lets do this!! What we need to do is figure out who, what, when and where.
So 1st~Who will all come? Im in forsure :D

2nd~What do we wanna do? Have a picnic, barbeque, meet at a resturant (omg how do you spell that it just dont look right),a bar, what?
Anything would be fine with me :)

3rd~When should we do this? I think we wait for the nicer weather forsure, plus lets give it atleast a couple of months to get more time to get more involved, so how bout sometime june or july? I also think it should be on a weekend day, or early evening.

4th~I think we should all state where exactly everyone is from and then go from there, we should pick a spot that is centrally located for us all. Me I am from Dubuque, and that is the farthest East as you can get, but Id be willing to drive to wherever (within reason anyway)

And I also like the t-shirt idea!!! So Prisonbud, you said you knew someone that could get us a deal on that. Could you check on it and see what you could come up with for us? Cost, sizes, styles, colors ect?? Great Idea!
Once we figure out exactly what it is we want to do we can go from there.

By the way I spoke to another individual today at Annie when I went to visit J and told her about PTO. She said that she will check it out tonight. I let her know about this get together idea and she said it sounds good. I just wanted to let you know that I"m trying to get more people involved.

I was thinking that since some would be traveling quite far, and Iowa weather the way it is, maybe this get together should be indoors, storm season is here.

You've got a great point. I think it'd be best if we met up at a restaurant or something. Maybe we could all get a hotel room for the night or something somewhere. I think it'd probably be best for us to meet somewhere indoors just b/c if we did a picnic or something aside from our stormy weather season, it'd be hard for the ones that have to drive further to keep food cold or hot or whatever.

I was looking at the map of Iowa just see where would be the best central location for most people. To me, it appears that either Cedar Rapids or Des Moines would be our best bet. What do you guys think?

Well sounds like we are getting some great Ideas. There are still some Iowans who need to respond yet, plus others I am sure. Keep the ideas comming, we'll get this together yet. Its sounding more and more like a restuarant is the place, but we still need the where yet.

Also Prisionbud got right on the T-shirt negotiations. He said we can get shirts for 4.75 for S~XL. $1.00 more for larger sizes. Great deal huh?

Lady Di, Evy, Tami, where are you? We need your input also, as I KNOW you wanna join the fun :thumbsup:

There is a good hotel in Newton, I can't rememeber the name right now, but I stayed there once and breakfast was free & had a pool , pool tables etc.

Something else we all should do is to tell our loved ones in the IDOC to tell everyone around them so we can get alot more involved from Iowa. I also have pen pals in several Iowa prisons.

Well, Heather pulled me out of the woodwork in Cedar Falls. :) lol. I think this sounds like a lot of fun!

If I go...it will be just me, unless we can have it in BlackHawk County (i.e. Waterloo/CedarFalls) because Aaron still won't be able to go out of county, to our knowledge. But I would also keep the Newton idea on the back burner because that is where IFI is and Aaron has been wanting to go down there for a while, so we would maybe be able to have something arranged along the lines of treatment...

As for when, late July or sometime in August or even September (i know i know...it's a long ways off) would be great. Yet again, the daily reporting/furlough/whatnot thing is a consideration, plus if all goes well we will hopefully be on our long awaited honeymoon at the end of the summer...we'll see.

And who...would you guys mind if i invited some of the IFI people? IFI is a prison ministry program and aaron and i know a lot of the guys and we ourselves are trying to figure out the needs of the masses to make what we're looking at doing a better ministry. But i don't want to show up with a bunch of people y'all have never met and overload you. not that any of us have met...but you know what i mean. they all deal with the prison system A LOT, so it's not like they're strangers!

And...T-shirts. BRING 'EM ON, BABY! I'm all for it. If i had two to sport from time to time i'd be a happy camper. and i'd be clothed.

i agree with the indoor idea. if it was a possibility for everyone to meet in cedar falls, i know a cafe (hee hee...i used to run it) that will hold about 40 people comfortably and would more than likely be available. or, i know we could meet at my church. and as for food then, just consider it covered. i would have to run this by some people just to make sure, but i'm guessing it's a very good possibility. what would you think of that? Let me know so i can take care of whatever i would need to here.

Hey Lam, how ya doin? I'm glad things are going so well for you and Aaron. That's wonderful.

I wouldn't have a problem going to the Cedar Falls area. I think we were looking for some place in the middle just b/c there are a few that are on the western side of IA and then quite a ways down south that would have already drive so far. I'm not real picky on where we meet up.

I think the more people the merrier. I think our get together will be lots of fun. I've been telling some of my friends that have their man in the IDOC about this and they said that they are game. They like the t-shirt idea too.

I'm looking forward to our get together. It'll be lots of fun.

I told Justin about our idea for our get together and he thinks it's a good idea. At first he kind of laughed, but he said that he's very happy that we all have a support system.

More info on the shirts~Prisonbud has been hard at work :cool:
The shirt will be black lettering (and we still have to decide exactly what we want them to say) and will come in ANY color. I also asked about what material they will be. They will be 100% cotton, so make sure ya get a slight bigger size as it will shrink some. When we get all the finals on the shirts, Prisonbud said SHE (so sorry about that buddy LOL) would be in charge of collecting the money for the shirts, so anymore questions can be directed her way.

Evy, I love you idea too. And yes, the more ppl the merrier, I would have no problem comming there either as long as the rest feel the same.
And do tell your T-shirt Idea...

Is it possible to get the shirts in toddler sizes or youth sizes. I think it'd be cute to get my little man one. I just didn't know if it'd be possible to get one in like a 4T or something. A childrens small woudl be way to big. If not, that's cool. Like I said, I was just curious about it all.

Okay everyone, I have to tell you I am WAY excited about this! I went home last night bubbling over and told Aaron and he things it is a GREAT idea and says we'll do whatever! Eek!

So, I know some of you have a really long way to drive if it is in Cedar Falls, but that would ensure Aaron and I could be there, PLUS we are definitely offering the place and all food free of chrage. That should help cut down on miscellaneous costs and whatnot I would think. If we for sure decide to do it in Cedar Falls, I also volunteer my services to work the Cedar Valley area and find a hotel that would give us discounts on a block of rooms. What do you think? Just give me the green light and watch me take off!

Okay, my t-shirt idea was to get baseball t's and have something about a "team" written on them...to convey the idea that we are each other's support system and team. :) But, it sounds like to keep it to the minimum price, that isn't an option. So I guess we can go back to the drawing board of what to write on them.

I'm really psyched and I hope we can get this hammered out soon! It will be so great to finally meet some of you. I'll drop Lady Di a line and see where she is.

Lam, I think you have some wonderful ideas. Since I don't live too far away, I'd be more than happy to help you any way that I can. It'd work out really well, b/c I have Thurs,Fri, Sat, and all day Sun off until I go to work Sunday night. So if we do decide on Cedar Falls, I'm willing to help in any way that I can.

i think all of us eastern Iowa folks are obviously in agreement with Cedar Falls, but how do you Westerners feel? i'm originally from Southwest Iowa...way down there in the corner...so i'm very familiar with the long drive and understand if that isn't going to work for someone. But if everyone is in agreement about Cedar Falls, let me know and I'll start workin' my mojo to get a really cool bash set up for us all.

And as far as the T-shirts, buddy will have to answer more of the specifics, but I bet that if we add any more writing it will put the cost up, so chances are we are just gonna have the front wrote on, as they have to set up a screen print for that. I myself will need 2 shirts. One for me, and one for Ricky's Mom (even though she wont come, I just know she would wear that shirt). And Tana, I know you are bringing your little man, I normally have my daughter on the weekends also, but I am still undecided if I will bring her or not. I do think one of my Gf's is gonna come with me though. She has a good friend in, he is from Iowa, but he is in federal so not in Iowa.

heard back from LadyDi today...as i guessed, she's been having computer problems. once she did get her computer back, she couldn't get on PTO b/c the settings weren't saved and she couldn't remember her password. she tried contacting PTO admin, five times, but no help. and then she couldn't get a new account b/c her email address is already used for the account she can't access, so...that's why we haven't seen her.

i'm going to plan for about 50. it's shooting high, but better more than not enough. so, bring anyone you can and keep reporting in to me with your estimates as to how many are coming...that will really help me.

yeah, for t-shirts i like "i have a loved one in the Iowa DOC" on the back and "ask me about prisontalk.com" on the front. so we can order any color(s)? i think i'll be ordering about 10 or more!

as for where is everyone...i checked some profiles of those who have checked in on the iowa forum, quite a few with loved ones here but they are states away. that could be part of the problem. i think it's great though if we can all "net" some folks who aren't on pto yet but we know from visiting/working/etc. that will want to come.
the more support we can generate for everyone, the better!

Im a little slow to the posting. I have a loved one in Indiana so im on that board a little more...my bad!

I live in Cedar Rapids. If you wanted it here, I have a HUGE yard because City land wraps around my house for about a 1/2 a mile on 3 sides of my house so there is plenty of room for volley ball, badmitten, etc. I even have the nets. Not to mention lots of room for lounging. Im willing to offer my place for the get-to-gether. I also have a BIG furnished basement and 55 inch TV. Could be LOTS of fun!

For those who wanted to crash a night, you could either sleep here at my place, or motel 6 is really close by and under 30 dollars a night *shrugs*

No one has got back to me on the get-to-gether. I think it was previously decided to be in Cedar Falls (forgive me, im sleepy, I work nights and just got off work). I personally would be thrilled to have you all here. I don't have a grill, but if one of you would want to bring one, we could girll out. It be less expensive then a hotel/eating out and a bit more laid back. Like I said, there is lots to do-Volley ball, badmitten. Bring your dogs. Tons of room for them to run and play! Get back to me if we want to do this. : - ) My basement is fully furnished and has a huge TV so we could even transform this into a giant slumber party. HA HA :)

Buddy~Good idea about sending some info to the Con Tac news. Want the duty since it was your idea? Go for it, the more we get out there, the better.
And I did send out my money order today for my shirts, so you should get that by Monday, let me know that ya did ok?

And Evy~ 12 noon sounds great. I think I can make it there in like 2-2 1/2 hours, not to bad. Now if I can just find that cafe :rolleyes:

Hey, did everyone lose interest in the Iowa get to gether, I have only one paid order for t shirts from a pto member.

Buddy~ maybe we are gonna have to extend the t-shirt time a bit. This is only a guess, but maybe ppl need more time to get the money together.
Me no way have I lost interest, I even have my LOA from work all taken care of :D
Maybe what ya should do is start a whole new thread just on the shirts. This thread has got quite big and the info on it everywhere. I'll start one if ya dont want to, but lets extend the time to get the money in by atleast a couple of weeks. The get together is still 2 1/2 months away, so we do have plenty of time yet.
And i wasnt very clear on this, but is the shirt gonna say Idoc or Iowa doc? Because if its just idoc, then hey I bet those shirts would work for Illinois and Indiana ptoers also, if they would like one.

Does anybody remember me?? It's as Evy said, computer problems (twice), working full time job now, & couldn't get back on PTO because of forgetting password.

June is out for me. My daughter graduates high school and we are busting our tails here to get the place in order.
July is out. We are on a two week vacation. Going to Oregon for 4 days to visit my family (aunts/uncles/cousins) and then it's off to Alaska for the remaining 10days. Husband's youngest brother lives there and we're having a mini vacation-family reunion. His mom and a total of 4 brothers meet in Anchorage.

August l4 looks good. But this is tentitive. Sounds great. Want to meet all you people. Evy I think you should bring the IFI people.

Will check in later to see what you all have decided.

I have a question for everyone. Some of the doorprizes are planned to be gas giftcards and film developing certificates...what gas stations are near you? (BP, Flying J, ?) and does everyone have a nearby Wal-Mart? (or Walgreens? or Osco?)

some of the IFI guys will probably be coming...if not the "big guns," i know some of our local IFI workers are wanting to come. we got the word out at the IFI cookout this past weekend in cedar rapids. i'm going to try and get ahold of everyone in a more official way, though, and make sure the graduates know about it, too.

I think that sounds great. I hope there is enough room for everyone, besides me, I'm bringing my family members of 9.
