Question
What special programs are available for ex-prisoners?

Answer
The Social Security Administration does not provide any benefits just for ex-prisoners.

Once you are released, you can get Supplemental Security Income (SSI)(see http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/11000.html) payments if you are 65 or older, or are blind or have a disability have little or no income and resources.

Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability (RSDI—Title II) (see http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10024.html benefits may be payable if you have worked and paid into Social Security enough years (this is determined by your age and the date you became disabled or turned age 62), and:

You have a physical or mental condition so severe that it will make you unable to do any work for at least a year, or
You are legally blind, even with glasses, or
You are age 62 or older.

If you meet the above requirements, Social Security benefits may also pay:

Your child who is under age 18, or severely disabled before age 22, or your wife who is age 62 or older, or is caring for your child who is under age 16 or severely disabled before age 22.

If you think you could qualify for benefits based on the above requirements, you should call Social Security’s toll-free telephone number, 1-800-772-1213. If you are severely disabled or over age 62 and you have dependents who could be paid based on your work covered by Social Security, you should call Social Security immediately.

If you are found approved for SSI, you are automatically guaranteed Medicaid, which is health insurance if you are sick etc.

Disability can be from a physical impairment, to mental/health related issues such as depression, drug addiction, or things that affect your health, chronic illness etc.

It takes 120 days for a decision to be made from the date of application.

Wannamae and SerenitysDancer... you both are correct. Except that the SSD/SSI approval process could take more than 180 days (6 months) depending on how easily they determine the severity and importance of your disability. Now, in the State of Oregon, the maximum amount we can get a month is $552 dollars. I'm not sure about the State of Texas, though... I want to tell you (Wesley) if your loved one is disabled or whatsoever, it's BEST to work. Social Security is a no way to live on. I recieved Social Security all my life up 'til age 18, then I fought for 10 months to get it reinstated and make it continue again due to my deafness. But finally, I got the benefit. I couldn't live on my own... I had to live on government-supported housing, get Food Stamps and state's health plan, and et cetera... Until I prayed and prayed really hard for 1 1/2 years and God gave me 2 full-time jobs. I practically had a coffee mug in my hand 21/7, LOL! Then I finally got a job that continues just until June 2005 because the State of Oregon's budget on the 2003-2004 fiscal year will end on June 2005, so they can't afford to keep me on the job afterwards. :( So... my point is that I've been working since March 2004 and I sure love the money. I feel really worthy and really proud and powerful and capable of anything in this world. I don't want to scare you, Wesley, but I want to tell you that Social Security is JUST ENOUGH to keep you off the floor, but not enough to get you back on your feet.

Thats great, and no what they give is not enough to live on. But I do believe that if you are SSI granted. There is a program called something like "Ticket to Work". Would have to look that up on the SS site.

SS Main Site~http://www.ssa.gov/

Employment Support For People with Disabilities~http://www.ssa.gov/work/

Just about every thing there is to know. In the SS search bar there is a link for Ex-Prisoners. And tells you why if or some people are getting a check after they are released.

i too am curently trying to live on disability check.is next to being homeless .i strongly encourage any one that can work at all to do so. i have been disabled for three years. thefirst year was spent doing all the red tape paper work to get on disability.unless you had a veryhigh paying job history. its just not worth it.only reason i went the disability path is i lived on or below the poverty level many years went to collage to get a better life. so for 8 years i worked a full time job, went to school at night raised my chldren. after finixhing school i got a job paying three times what i made working min wage jobs.so when i learned i would be disabled and could no longer work in the field i was educated in.i thiugt i could live on disability. but cant not in the life style i had at day of disability.and i did not go to school all those years to work a min wage joband live in poverty.now after actually living on it these past 2 years. im going back to school once again to go back into the field at a position above the one i had.tired of having nothing again.

Vics woman, I don't know what kind of disability you have.. but considering a Data Entry position would be the best thing. It's the best for me..

WAY TO GO GIRL!!! Living on welfare is no way to live. Been there...done that. The system is designed to keep people oppressed. You can get just enough to survive and not enough to pull yourself up out of the hole. Keep on reaching for the stars!
