Weidner surrenders to federal prison

Former Topeka bank executive Del Weidner surrendered to federal prison authorities this afternoon in Yankton, S.D.

An official at the Yankton Federal Prison Camp confirmed Weidner, 50, checked into the college-campus-turned-prison, where he will serve out his sentence of six years and six months for breaking federal banking laws. Weidner won't be eligible for parole.

The former banker and community activist was in relatively good spirits, said Bruce Simon, the Kansas City, Mo., attorney who is handling Weidner's appeal in the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

"Considering he's starting a prison sentence, his demeanor was fine," said Simon, who didn't accompany Weidner on the six-hour drive from Topeka to Yankton today.

Weidner was convicted in July 2003 of one count each of money laundering and conspiracy and two counts of filing false bank entries. He pleaded guilty to two additional counts of filing false bank entries.
