Mrsmoody,
I received a letter from my Congressman last week stating that H.R. 5296 has been referred to the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
Can you please tell me where you were able to obtain your current information so I may keep up with the bill also?
Thanks!

Cheryl,
They bill was created simply because the Federal government cannot afford to fight the war on drugs and the war on terror at the same time. The bill states that parole for inmates of a "non-voilent" nature wil reduce the billlios of federal dollars spent each year on housing/food/clothes etc. It is strictly budget based concept that hopefull will bring about some change. My husband recieved a flyer concerning the bill and he has a chldhood friend that works at the Capital. We'll have to do the best we can to get more information out of our Congress reps. I have written several letters and I too am awaiting a reply.

Thank You so much for pointing out this bill. I just EMailed my congressman in support of this. Also, if anyone would like to read the bill, just type in congressional record to any search engine. This will give you the Thomas web site which will allow you to search the congressional record by bill number. It is not the most fascinating of reads because it was written by legislators, but it is definately worth the time and effort.

Mrsmoody,
I have written all of my Representatives and Congresspersons and have had 2 responses by letter. The first Congressman obviously did not know what I was talking about because he referred to another bill.
The second Congressmen is the one who advised me of the current status and that he would vote in favor if and when it came to a vote in Congress. I intend to call the second Congressman and plea with him to either sponsor H.R.5296 or find a sponsor.
Let's all stay viligant on this issue because it means our loved ones will be home much sooner!

To everyone who wishes to support bill H.R. 5296, you will find a list of the members of the special committee on homeland security listed in another forum on this site. Please go to the laws and legislation section and under a post from 10/26/02 from kalysse is a contact list of all members of this committee.
I would suggest that we all write to these members as well as our representatives in the House and Congress. Time is of the essence on this issue and we need to take action quickly before the current session ends for the Holidays.
Thanks to everyone for your support.
