View Full Version : (Nephew In) Wilcox Prison, Georgia
JENNY2000 04-14-2004, 11:38 PM My nephew just got sent to Wilcox State Prison. Our family is trying to find out what some of their policies are. These are some of our questions:
If you send them money how do you do it ?
What can they have?
How often can you see them?
Policy Of Visitation?
Since we are in Florida, do we have to be on the visitation list?
What are the visiting hours?
Do they have computers?
If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it a lot.

mamabear 04-15-2004, 05:43 AM Hi Jenny,
Welcome to PTO!!! My fiance Wayne was at Wilcox from last February until November.
The staff there is real helpful about answering questions over the phone. For visitation you have to be on an approved visiting list, if he was sent to Wilcox from another facility, immediate family should already be on the list. (Mother, Father, sister, brother, child, spouse) I had to fill out a "significant other" form to be aapproved, but once that was taken care of , no problem, and the state visting list follows them from facility to facility. Visiting hours are Saturday and Sunday from 9am-3pm. They have a good sized visiting room, and the CO's are nice, and pretty much leave you alone. You can take in $20 in quarters in a clear bag, I have taken in 30 before and that was no problem either. You can't send him anything that is not first approved by the Warden, such as socks, underwear, etc. Once a month (if necessary) they can fill out a list for additional items they may need, then you can send stuff to him. To send books, all books have to come from the publisher, and he can have 4 books sent in at a time. I have sent Wayne books from Barnes & Noble with no problem, because the books are shipped from their warehouse. He can have a total of 8 books in his room at one time.
To send money to your nephew, you need to send a money order with his name and GDC number on it, also the name and address of the remitter has to be on the money order. I don't know if they have computers at Wilcox, I don't think they do, but call and ask.
I hope I have answered all of your questions, if you need any more info, please feel free to post it here or pm me.
Hugs,
Becky

Ants Girl 04-21-2004, 05:00 PM Thank you for the information regarding visitation my fiance' is at Wilcox and I will be visiting him in July so it seems somewhat the same as when he was in Ware in Waycross. Do you have to be assigned a table when you go in or do you buy things from the vending machines first? Better yet what is the process when you go to visit? If its not too much trouble walk me through it from the time you park until you get in. Do they take pictures there?Hi Jenny,

You are very welcome!
Welcome to PTO :) You will find lots of helpful information here. Post an intro when you get a chance!
mamabear 04-23-2004, 06:50 AM Hi Ants Girl.
OK, are you ready? When you get to Wilcox, and you turn in the driveway, there is an old cemetary on the left, before you get to the parking lot. Park the car, put the car in park, turn off the ignition, get out of the car, lock the car. LOL I'm such a smarty pants today:) There is only one way to get in the gate, and you can see it from the parking lot. You stand at the gate until the CO buzzes you in. You have to fill out your name, tag number, etc. and give them your keys and license. You have to walk down the sidewalk and sort of lean to the left to get to the building where visitation is. Once inside, you fill out another form with your name, address, etc, and your inmates name and number. You go through a metal detector at that point and then you are buzzed in to another little foyer type room, and they give you a metal disk that tells you where to sit. You go in and give the paper to the CO and show him the disk, (the disk also tells everyone where your keys are, so when you leave they can just hand them to you) He will point out a table to you, they have a fairly good sized visting room there, and the chairs are around the table, not at either side of it, so you can sit pretty close to your guy. Ad soon as I was assigned a table, I would hit the vending machines, they have decent stuff in them and there are 2 or 3 microwaves also. Going to the bathroom is another story, DO NOT DRINK A LOT OF COFFEE BEFORE YOU GET TO WILCOX!!! You have to have a CO unlock the bathroom door for you, and if they are busy you have to wait until someone gets back there. They are real nice, and they even wait for you to finish going potty (I was so embarassed the first time!!!, but when you gotta go, you gotta go LOL) The CO's and staff at Wilcox are very nice, and if you have questions, they will answer them for you. Also,if you need driving directions, they are good at that too. One time I left Wilcox and was headed to St. Simons Island, and was going to go all the way back to 75. One of the CO's told me a different way to go, it was a lot faster, a lot prettier drive, and it cut 1 whole hour off of my driving time!!! All in all vistation there is real good. If you have anymore questions, please let me know. I will answer as best i can, hope you have a real good visit!!!!
Hugs,
Becky
Ants Girl 04-26-2004, 10:24 AM You are too much but thanks for the info. Is the crowd larger on saturday or sunday?
Do you know the name of any motels close by?
LORNA 05-05-2004, 08:15 PM ants girl-
The crowds there aren't bad (except the holidays and evn then really not crowded). Saturdays bring more visitors though. I always stayed in the Best Western in Hawkinsville, never had any problems. There were some fast food places downtown. Overall, unless you travel to Macon your most excitement would be inside the hotel room so bring something (magazines, books, yarn) with you.
crichardson_83 12-15-2004, 09:17 PM Please help me understand, Can you hug&kiss him? will he be able to hold his Daughter? how long is the visit? my boyfriend of five years and father of child is in wilcox please help me.
Willssweetie 12-16-2004, 05:24 PM Hi Jenny. Welcome to PTO. I got so excited when I read your post cuz I thought I finally get to help someone. But Mamabear beat me to it..LOL. Oh well. She did a better job of giving the low-down anyway. My fiance(s.p.?) has been there for almost a year now. As far as Georgia prisons go I think Wilcox is one of the more layed back ones. For what it is worth I always send postal money orders and have had no problems so far. I also use Barnes & Noble to send books and have had no problems there either. I recently found out inmates are allowed magazine subscriptions there. Of course there are certain magazines that are restricted as well with the books. I'll be visiting Will for Christmas this year and will post my experience for whoever else comes along and wants info about Wilcox. Again, welcome to the PTO family. :)
