A prisoner has hijacked a car after stepping out of a prison van and escaping from a central Sydney courthouse today.

The man was due to appear at Central Local Court in Liverpool Street when he managed to escape custody, a NSW police spokesman said.

He said the man hijacked a car, believed to be a red VW Golf convertible, outside the court and fled.

Police said the man had escaped from custody, apparently fleeing after stepping out of a prison van, at 9.30am (AEST).

He carjacked the vehicle outside the court complex but the man driving it was not hurt.

The escapee had been arrested overnight over an unspecified matter in Kings Cross.

He was described as being of white European appearance, 170-175 cm tall, of large build and aged between 25 and 30.

He had short spiked hair with a long brown fringe and three days facial growth.

He was last seen wearing a grey polo shirt, long black pants and had bare feet.

Anyone who saw him was urged to dial 000 immediately, a police spokesman said.
