Police counselled after siege ends in shooting

Several police officers involved in a fatal shooting in south-east Queensland yesterday are receiving counselling over the incident.

A 29-year-old man was shot and killed by officers from the Special Emergency Response Team after a dramatic 19 hour stand-off at a farmhouse west of Gympie.

The siege began on Wednesday when the man blocked the road to his house and threatened neighbours with a gun.

Neighbours claim the man had become withdrawn after the recent death of his father.

Police Inspector Alan Bourke says the cause of the incident has become the subject of three investigations.

"Police were called by a woman to the address as a result of a number of hay bales located at the scene," he said.

"She approached a male person on the premises who threatened her with a gun.

"She then called the police.

"The police then went to the scene and were confronted by the man with the firearm."
