A FEMALE worker at a juvenile detention centre in Western Australia is due to appear in court this morning, charged with having sex with a 17-year-old male inmate.

The 37-year-old woman was charged by detectives last night with four counts of sexually penetrating a child over 16 years under her care, and one count of being a person in authority indecently dealing with a child.

WA police said the woman was employed as a liaison officer at the Banksia Hill detention centre, a secure centre for youngsters aged from 10 to 17 years.

It will be alleged by police that between January and April this year, while employed at the centre, the woman engaged in sexual intercourse with the 17-year-old male detainee.

The woman, from the Perth suburb of Gosnells, will appear in the Perth Court of Petty Sessions this morning.

David Harris, spokesman for WA's Department of Justice, said the woman's contract had expired recently and she was no longer employed at the facility.

"The detainee has made allegations that the staff member has engaged in sexual conduct with him," he said.

Banksia Hill, 20km south-east of Perth, is a secure centre set in 16 hectares of land bounded by a perimeter security wall and monitored by electronic surveillance.

The centre has a range of accommodation and special programs catering for 120 male and female offenders who have been sentenced by the courts to a few months to several years.
