Dear friends,

Thank you for taking the time to read this most important message from the bowels ofthe Texas prison system known as Death Row. My name is Lamont "Mont" Reese and I'm
sentenced to Death, awaiting my fate here on Texas Death Row. I've been here for morethan a year now. I am now embarking upon a "HUNGER STRIKE". Not to protest the
inhuman conditions here on Death Row. As of March 22, 2002 I have not been eating andwill not be eating until my lawyers or SOMEBODY provides me with the legalrepresentation of which I am entitled to by law, or at the least to help me!

The reason I'm writing this letter is to bring attention to my most urgent situationwhich is quickly becoming more hopeless with each passing day. You see, I have
proclaimed my innocence of the triple murder for which I was arrested (in 1999) andsentenced to death. The State of Texas has "no" physical evidence connecting me to
the crime or the scene of the crime. there was NOT ONE eye-witness at my trial whotestified they observed me present when the murders occurred (even though there were
over a dozen witnesses to the crime, no one identified me).

My dilemma is that my Court appointed Attorneys have sold me out, first in my Trialand now in my Direct Appeal and Post-Conviction Habeas Corpus Application. My Direct
Appeal Attorney, William "Reagan" Wynn, filed a direct appeal brief several months ago raising eight (8) points of errors. All these points concern only the punishment
phase of my trial and NONE of the errors are even properly preserved for appeal. I attempted to have my direct appeal "abated" in order to raise additional issues and
to get an Attorney who would raise the issues that I've wanted raised on my appeal. This Motion (Motion for Abatement) was summarily denied by the Texas Court of
Criminal Appeals on the same day it was filed.

My Court-Appointed writ attorney, Richard Alley, has never spoken to me and hardly answers any of my correspondence. My State Application for a writ of Habeas Corpus is
due April 17, 2002, unless Alley requests an extension of time in which to file the writ. However, he recently advised me that he is near completion of preparing my State Writ. This, without ever speaking to me, nor, to my knowledge, investigating any of the many issues which are available to present in the Writ.

There are so many issues which could be raised in my State Writ, some of them complex, thus I cannot begin to list or elaborate on them here. Suffice it to say that these issues would likely be instrumental in saving my life and perhaps gaining my freedom from this wrongful conviction and sentence. the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled in Ex parte Graves, ____S.W.3d___ (2002) that death sentenced prisoners are not entitled to "competent" counsel in State Habeas proceedings. Thus, I have no legal resource to obtain adequate legal representation. I have written Richard Alley numerous times over the past couple of months (of which
letters I have copies of). I've told him what claims need to be investigated and raised in my state writ. To date, he has not replied to "any" of my letters.

This is why I must stop eating. this may ultimately result in my death. However, I feel as if my attorney's, who are supposed to be my advocates, already have the
lethal needle in my arm and it will only be a matter of time before the State assists them in adding the lethal dosage of drugs to murder me. I call it "MURDER" because
you cannot legally kill an innocent man under any legal system. My court-appointed attorneys are not even trying to help me. Desperate circumstances often call for
desperate measures.

What I am asking of you is that you would write and/or call my attorneys, governor Perry, the State Bar of Texas and any other State Officials that might intervene on
my behalf. I need help now, before it is too late. I am listing below the addresses and phone numbers of my Attorneys and Governor Perry. Please call or write to these
and other officials.

In closing, I want to "thank you" for your time and attention in this matter. Anything you can do on my behalf is greatly appreciated!

In hope and peace,

Lamont D. Reese

Did I read this line correctly?

the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled in Ex parte Graves, ____S.W.3d___ (2002) that death sentenced prisoners are not entitled to "competent" counsel in State Habeas proceedings.

Death sentenced prisoners are not entitled to "competent" counsel? What kind of crock is that?

The more I read and learn the angrier I get.

Yep, you read that right. I am not entirely up to speed on TX legal system so I am not sure how much weight that statement actually has. If it is true - and it wouldn't surprise me, probably one of Texecutioner Bush's rulings - then it is bloody outrageous!

I heard those storys over and over - the court appointed attorneys never do a good job. Paul Colella was ready to die in December 1997, because his attorney "forgot" to file his hapeas appeal. Only with the help of great attorneys he is still alive and won the right to do this appeal again (even it was clear that the state will not act on it).

I have a friend in CA whose lawyers 'forgot' to file something too. It is so, so scary. Maybe if the State paid these State Appointed Attorneys a decent fee they would do something more than a half-assed job, and they would get Attorneys who were good at their jobs, not the ones who fall asleep / turn up drunk etc, etc.

I'm going to Stick this thread so that it will hopefully receive the full amount of attention it deserves. Lets work on this!
