Hi myjulian:
I had the same questions before my first visit to San Quentin and found out things the hard way. You cannot wear denim of any kind. I wore light tan pants with a flowered shirt and didn't have any problem. Shoes -- no thongs. I wore my burkenstock sandals with a pair of socks and didn't have any problem. Don't wear anything that's soild green of any kind. They won't let you in if you do. Shirts and dresses have to be a certain length -- two fingers length above the knee is all that they allow. No sleeveless shirts; no see through tops. They are strick with their dress code.
Hope you have a great visit with your loved one. I remember how I felt the first time. My stomach was doing flip flops.
Take Care
Sylvia

What is allowed? I fly to San Quentin every two weeks to see my fiance. I have worn a variety of skirts - never two inches higher than the knee (they will make you change). Be careful of white t-shirts as they cannot be "see through" or remotely "see through" They will look to see how "low cut" a top is and may ask you to pull it up slightly. I wear all sorts of jewelry, belts, anklets, etc. and have no problem. White jeans were fine, but I did see someone with some light black jeans who was asked to change last week. The mid-riff cannot be seen. Very important thing to note - if you have a car alarm attached to your key ring - or a keyless entry system, they will not let you take that through. You can only have a "key" to your vehicle. There are lockers in the receiving entrance (bring extra quarters as the lockers tend to eat at least a few of them each visit) They will not let you wear sunglasses into the facility. Depending on the type of visit you have you may be able to bring food. Unfortunately, mine are non-contact which means I can bring nothing but me into the facility. If it is a non-contact visit - I try to request the first booth on occassion because you can use the "phone" which allows you to hear each other. Otherwise, we read lips half the time because you can only hear every other word. Make sure you get there at least a 1/2 hour or more before your visit. Every time I have done that I am able to get in for at least an hour and sometimes for about an hour and fifteen minutes. There is a bathroom around the front of the receiving building as well as pop machines - make sure you go before you go inside so you don't lose any time. Good luck.
