My friend has been in detention since early Feb.. It was supposed to be for 10 days. He's an Arizona inmate at a private prison in Newton, Texas.
Do you think it would do any good to call the chaplain?
Karen
Why was he denied the sweatlodge? Was it the prison that denied him that?

He is in a cell after an alcohol offense--his bunkmate in the dorm was always making stuff--with no testing done he could be even innocent. He is remaining in the cell until they have a place to put him. He was told they are waiting on word from the central office so we think he may be transferred when AZ's contract is up with this private prison. Unfortunately, that contract is up in June. I think my friend has always been truthful with me (he knows I can check him out on the Arizona DOC website). He's actually enjoying the privacy and able to get lots of drawing done--he's a brilliant artist. Thanks for your interest, Karen
If he is kept in detention the sweat is a privilige that will be taken away from him.

Aya,
He is now in detention simply because they have no room for him in the dorm. But at this point, the prison has had problems with no water and electricity, inmates are fighting and the guards are inept and helpless. I hope he's safer where he is. People are trying to contact the media in Arizona to let them know what is going on.

My friend called today from Newton Correctional Facility. He is finally out of the hole--his 10 days became 3 months due to an administrative mistake. He got to feel the sun today--so happy to see daylight he even got a sunburn. He is in a better dorm with quieter neighbors and the staff is nicer. He's so excited about being in the sweatlodge tomorrow and back to doing his artwork. He is on cloud nine and so am I! Karen
