Hey all! I'm in Texarkana and my fiance is in Cummins. Anybody heard any GOOD news lately?? I guess my good news would be that I get to have my first visit this Sunday.
Hey Hunt's-girl - how is it going with your fiance?

Misstussey42 - Everything's going good. He's been in the hole, and they get a visit the first Thursday of every month, so I saw him yesterday :)! We had a wonderful visit, even though he was handcuffed and shackled, but we always have a great time. Hope you have a wonderful visit this Sunday!! Good to hear that you finally get to see him! The first time I saw Hunter after he got to Cummins, we were in such shock to be together again at our first visit that we had perma-grins the whole time. Hunter gets out of the hole on Tuesday, so I get to see him next weekend. Be sure to post how your visit went! :)

Hunts-girl - Well, I got to see my honey for the first time in person since Feb. 17th! It was such a great visit. It felt good to be able to hug him. He looked good. It was also one of the saddest times I have ever had. It was so hard to want to take him home and know that I couldn't! He just cried and cried and I just cried and cried. I wondered all the way home will it ever be better? It just doesn't seem fair. but yet I know that there isn't anything we can do about it but just try and make the best of it while he is in there. His P.E. date isn't until Feb of 2007. It is so hard to imagine being that long without him. And I know that the thought of me leaving crosses his mind. I try and try to tell him that I will be here, I am not going to ever leave him. But I know that sometimes he feels like it is hopeless. When this first started I thought about and talked about it all the time, until I got my feelings hurt because other people that have never been through this don't understand it the way that I do. Now I keep it to myself most of the time and when I can't hold it in anymore I talk to you all or to his family.
We have been through the cycle of trying to find someway to help get him out sooner. I am sure that everybody goes through that. but in my heart I know that God is the only one that will get him out and he will do it in his time and in his way.
His diabetes is really bad and he has already been through times that I am amazed that he came through when his blood sugar was running anywhere from 650 to 900. God is the reason he came through it. I told him to keep praying and behaving, and God would take care of it when it was time. The hardest thing to do is to turn it over to him and let it go. Especially when you see them and all you can think of is taking them home. I hope that you have a good visit this weekend. I know that you are looking forward to being able to see him without the handcuffs and shackles. I know how hard it would be on me to have to go through that. I pray I never have to and hopefully you won't have to either. Let me know how yours goes.

I'm so happy to hear everything went so great! Yeah, the hardest part starts 15 minutes before you know you have to leave and there's nothing you can do about it. That's the hardest part of this whole situation, there is nothing you can do about anything, you just have to roll with the punches. And when I'm in his arms at visitation, I feel at such peace and can't imagine not being with him in a few hours, then a few minutes, then a few seconds time. You're in their arms one minute, and then they're gone the next. It's so painful. Hunter's p.e. date isn't until the early part of 2007 too. 3 years is a long time and this is definitely the most painful thing I've ever been through, but I will wait as long as I have to. And about going to the hole again, I will be so pissed if he goes back there. :) But I really think he won't.

Hey Hunt's Girl - I have a new question for you. We have been talking about the hole. Terry has run into some trouble :( . He lost his youngest son 10 years ago this last week and it is always a hard week for him. He has gotten discouraged and down and his sugar level is running crazy. I am just scared he is going to get into trouble. What happens when they go to the hole and how long are they in there? I am praying that nothing happens but, I want to be prepared for what to expect.

Jade01

The hole is isolation. They have to stay in a cell with one other cellmate 24 hours a day. They do not leave the cell and their meals are brought to them. They are allowed to have a shower two or three times a week, can only shave about that much, and aren't allowed to have deoderant. They do not get commissary. They cannot bring anything (like books and stuff) in the cell with them except envelopes and writing paper. They are sent to the hole in regards to what offense they commit. It could be anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months or maybe even longer. Hunter was sent to the hole for 30 days for cigarettes. Hopefully Terry will start feeling less discouraged and nothing will come of it. Unless he does something outright wrong, I don't think they can send him to the hole for being in a bad mood. :) Good Luck!

I talked to Terry just a little bit ago. He is still okay. He sounds real down. I tried to give him assurance but what can you say to someone who is in that situation?? He got moved to a different barricks. This one is worse than the one he was in. He was in a pretty good one. The doctor changed his work orders to get him on the day shift so that his medicine would work better with his schedule. His Captain didn't like it. They had words. He didn't write him up but moved him and it is harder on him. He is still not on the day shift for work. I tried to tell him to just hang in there. Girl, I don't know about you but I hope and pray that when all this is over that our guys decide they are through with it. And I hope that being in there doesn't change their outlook so much that it can't be repaired when they get out. I know that I couldn't deal with it if I was in his shoes. I guess what I can be thankful for right now is that he isn't in any major trouble. How did your first visit with Hunter go since he is out of the hole? I know you were excited about getting to see him with out the shackles. Thanks for the support. I am keeping you and him in my prayers.

Oh I am definitely praying that this is the last of Hunter's legal troubles! I cannot imagine having to go through all of this all over again :(. I wasn't able to see Hunter last Saturday because I had seen him in the hole only a week and a half before, and they told me, (yes after I had already driven all the way there) that since he was a class 4, he could only get visits every two weeks. We didn't realize the hole visitation counted as one of the visits. I should have called before I went all the way down there. But somehow his parents got in, it must have been a mistake, so now I have to wait 2 weeks until I can see him again :(. His dad called me while they were visiting him and told me that Hunter was beside himself with worry, freaking out that I wasn't there, thinking I had gotten into a car wreck. My poor baby! It was definitely a depressing day! But, now I'm looking forward to 2 weeks from now. You and Terry are definitely in my prayers too! Hopefully he'll get day shift. That's just not right that they haven't moved him yet - especially since it was the doctor's orders!

Wow, everyone shows up when I'm not here, huh? Glad to see this place jumpin'. Several from Central AR I see--I'm in LR, my guy is at Tucker (not Max).

Gotta hate seeing your guy in shackles, huh? What unit is he at? Most of them put the guys in their own cell when they go to the hole, never heard of them sharing with another inmate.

Vince, good luck--so you get the Fed. prison, huh? Don't know which one to suggest, but I bet it'd be better than the state ones.

Vince - Yeah, I don't know which one is better either. But good luck.

Countrys guirl - Hunter is at Cummins unit. Yeah, I thought it was weird that they're in there with one other person, but they are. And they can talk to the people on each side of their cell too. Which I'm glad they can because otherwise I think he would have gone crazy. And yeah, it definitely sucks to see your man in shackles. And I really don't understand the reason why they put them in shackles. There's no way they're going anywhere. I think it's just all part of the punishment.

Mstussey - so much in your 4/5 message is so familiar to me. I used to get really SAD and then MAD that i had to leave there without him, like it was just so unfair! I think cummins visitation is more loose than most others in ADC, so we're lucky - get to kiss and hug all we want. it NEVER gets easier, and you DO get used to it (and i'm not sure that that's a good thing!)

Having diabetes in prison is scary. 650 - 900 well that's just lethal! Evidently god has his hand on Terry, or he'd be gone, so try to rest easy in that. I know crazy blood sugar can be hell on your mood, which can cause trouble, so just do what u can to keep his spirits up.

Hunt's girl - I know, i'm worried how my husband will act if i just don't show up one satruday. I went up there sick as a dog last weekend, just because I knew he'd panic if he didn't see me. I couldn't make it til 3:30, just felt too bad!

Yeah, Cummins definitely has a bad reputation. When I was talking to one of my co-workers about it and told her where he was at, she looked at me confused and asked "now what is he in there again for, I thought that was for the really bad ones" I explained to her that there were all kinds of offenders at Cummins, but she probably now thinks he's in there for something a lot crazier than he is.

That just seems really odd to me, especially for a MAXIMUM security unit. I'm familiar with "the hole" at another unit, one that is medium security & it isn't like that at all! The guys are in a cell, with one bed & the cell is behind a door with a window...that way the guards & whoever else wants to be a peeping tom can look in on them. It's a really creepy place too. They can see 4 walls (one with a door--& a window) & the bars that separates them from the door. Can't see the guys next to them & once the door is closed, can't hear anything on the outside.

The shackles are probably for "security" purposes--since he's in "the hole" he's obviously been a BAD BOY (LOL) & they've gotta keep him under lock & key for THEIR protection! HA...if they'd get some real guards in there they wouldn't have to worry about what might happen to them. The inmates LET the guards control the prison which is probably why they are so worried about the safety of personnel & don't give a crap about the inmate & his needs.

OOPS, sorry for what turned into a rant...didn't mean to get on my soap-box. *climbs down*

Is Cummins a maximum security unit? I didn't even know that. I don't know the difference between maximum, medium, or minimum either. Can anybody explain?

04-19-2004, 06:04 PM
No,,,, Cummins isn't max - i think that's just public perception. i think it's the luck of the draw. My husband was supposed to go to brickeys and traded his watch to get on the cummins list (HG, that's why he didn't have a watch at cummins and wanted me to bring him one!!)
ADC has beds that come open and they just tell the county jails how many beds, and they fill them up. It doesn't depend on your charge.
Think about it, if cummins was max, why would visitation be so loose?? SO much drugs, money and tobacco get in thru visitation. We get to kiss and hug the whole time (much looser than other prisons in ADC), also they NEVER check your shoes! I've seen one guard look in shoes one time. They never check your pockets, i had a big bulge in my pocket and no one said "what's that" If it was max, it would be more strict. Also, my truck has NEVER been searched (my father in law's was once) and i've been there almost every saturday for over 6 months.
The strictest i've seen them was when i went for a parole hearing and the only difference there was we had to take off our shoes and throw them thru the metal detector instead of throwing them under the table.
Cummins has a horrible rep, and deserves it, but is not maximum.

Country Girl - the first guy who got murdered at cummins after my husband got there was "in the hole." His cellmate slit his throat. It's no country club, but it could be a LOT worse!!

Jade01

Hmmm, I always thought Cummins was a Max facility, & I worked for the DOC! Of course I wasn't at the Cummins unit. There are even people within the prison that say it's a max unit. Oh well, sorry bout my confusion.

Julie--people might act that way cuz everyone knows that Cummins is where the executions take place. Most people don't know that Death Row is at Tucker Max....just a thought...

Yep....I sure wouldn't want to be the guard(s) that transported that guy--talk about a somber ride!
They've considered moving them to Cummins, but they have some reason for not doing it, can't remember what it is though. Something about safety but who knows--you know the ADC!

 Hey all! I haven't been on in a little while. Terry and I have been talking about the guys that they are bringing back to prison. I think it is really horrible! I can't imagine getting Terry back and then having to let him go again for some more of the pure "hell" that it is.
Terry's blood sugar is still outrageous. His spirits have picked up a little. I went for another visit Sunday and his BS was 538. He was just crying and crying. He said he hurt really bad. His worst fear is that his kidneys will be in such bad shape when he gets out that he won't even be able to have a normal life anymore.
I have heard horror stories about the medical care that they have in prison but I never thought I would be living it. Cummins hasn't had a doctor in a week and a half. I haven't heard if they have hired another one yet or not. I just keep praying and praying. Terry has already survived bouts with his diabetes that should have put him close to a coma. The only thing that is keeping him safe is God. That is what I told him. God isn't through with him yet.
But I know that Terry isn't the only inmate that is not getting the medical attention that they deserve. I hope that they get lots of lawsuits filed on them.
Sorry to ramble on. I get so mad:angry: when I think about the "wonderful reform program" that the prison system has. I used to believe in it but, it is alot different than they make it sound in the handbook.

I had to bite my lip (and looking back, i shouldn't have) when i heard someone say "those guys in there get better medical care than we do, and it's all paid for by the state!" ugh!!

There's a lady at cummins with a boyfriend or husband with diabetes and she's calling senators at home in the middle of the night to make sure her man gets the care he needs. She's quite feisty!

They get crap treatment & if they need more than what they can get at the unit then they are S.O.L. I know of a guy with cancer that was dying because they wouldn't get him the treatment the doctor recommended & wouldn't release him so he could get it himself--like he could pay for it! He was months from flattening his time, less than a year & they still wouldn't give him emergency (medical) parole. I still wonder what happened to him, if he's okay, but I have no way of knowing...It was so frustrating to look at this man & see him dying & there wasn't anything he could do or that I could do except urge him to write letters & have his family make phone calls. ARGH!!!!

Terrible. The guy who wrote the "long line writer" died just a few months before he was to be released. Good news - an inmate named Lacey had a quadruple bypass and i saw him like 4 weeks after his surgery and he was like 100% fine!! Either he's a great healer and got great medical care or God's really smiling on him!

misstussey42

juliwaits - I would sure like to know who that lady is because I would join her. It is their right as a human being to get the medical attention they need. I am ready to stand on capital hill and scream just to get attention for him. I have a petition going. Terry's daibetes was developed when he had a motorcycle wreck at 12 and damaged him pancreas. He is completely insulin dependent. If you talk to that lady, you tell her that I will join forces with her. I'll do anything to be certain that he comes home in the same shape left in.
