View Full Version : Percent of money taken out of money orders sent to prisoners at San Quentin Prison?
Hello, Im NEW, so Im not sure if Im even posting this question in the right spot!! I heard that in SQ that possibly 30 percent was going to be taken out of money orders sent to inmates! Does anyone know anything about this?? I cant belive this is true!! Thanks to everyone and this site, for all your help.
Snapdragon 03-28-2004, 02:16 PM KLH ~ Unfortunately it is true. I couldn't believe it either so I asked my friend. His reply was that after deductions from his account he receives about 55% of the amount that was originally sent to him from each sender. Plus he is also charges $5.00 per doctors visits. I don't know if this affects everyone at SQ but for my friend this is what is being withheld.

Eric's Homegirl 03-29-2004, 09:16 AM It was going from 22% to 30% for resitution and court costs. And anything that is not
an emergency issue the inmate would be charged $5.00. Suzi
Mrs.L 03-29-2004, 05:51 PM He only has to pay restitution if it was ordered by the courts. Right now the CDC takes 33% of everything that is sent in EXCEPT funds sent in for family visiting and community leaves to apply towards his court ordered restitution. The money that is sent in for community leaves or family visits must be sent in with a special form to be exempt from the taking of restitution. The rumor is that in July it will go up to 55%. The CDC takes 10% of the money for the "inmate welfare fund". What they do with it is still questionable to me. If they are taking 55% of his money now he needs to find out why. :fb:
Thanks to all that have responded!! Maybe Ill just send stamps!! LOL
kreepsgirl 03-29-2004, 09:53 PM Yes it is true.
blackdragon_kit 03-29-2004, 10:24 PM Yes, they take 25% of everything my husband recieves until his fines are paid. He also told me that if he was to get work release, they would take $50.00 a week. Joe pays $5.00 a visit to the doctor and for certain non-life-demanding prescriptions (like a heartburn medication), he would have to pay full-price.
Eric's Homegirl 03-30-2004, 12:15 AM Isn't is interesting how the state continues to screw all of us, whether inmate or not?
When my hubby was sent to SQ he wasn't even supplied a toothbrush let along tooth
paste. The state wants all inmates to suffer as much as they can. Never used to be
like this, till now.......
madathena 04-20-2004, 11:03 PM I kind of have a dumb question...do all the prisoners have to pay restitution? how do you know how much they "owe"? Do the inmates receive a statment or anything when they get a MO? Like an account statement that has all the details on it? hrm.
brenda12 04-22-2004, 07:26 PM No that's not a dumb question. Not all prisoners have to pay "restitution". There are two types of restitution both of which come by way of valid court order and are reflected in both the sentencing transcript and the Abstract of Judgement (official commitment document). The first is called a victim restitution order which has to be paid directly to the victim of either a qualifying violent felony offense or a qualifiying sexual offense. The second is a court restitution in which the inmate has to reimburse the court for a partial offset of the cost of prosecution.
swebb1989 03-19-2005, 02:01 PM I find your view interesting! The state screws you all your life? Makes the immates suffer as much as they can? I am sorry honey but the least that your man can do is buy his own toothbrush on the way to the big house! And the way it used to be? In the olden days they would have had prarie justice here in the wild west so I doubt that you hubby would still be alive for you to visit! So don't be so harsh on the State after all they are giving your hubby 3 hots and a cot!

News247 03-19-2005, 04:02 PM so, it's best then, to send the 30lb packages from approved vendors as often as allowed and to also send all books, magazines, etc directly from the publishers and then to send stamps, pens and papers - putting less in the "commissory" account?
They will have more actually to them this way, than if you just send a money order every month - correct?
Is that how to work it?
News247 03-19-2005, 04:05 PM is there a limit to the number of books, magazines, tapes, newspapers they can recieve each month?
CSunshyn 03-19-2005, 04:14 PM Yep! There sure is. I think it varies institution to institution though.
