Urgent request: Contact your state senator - for-profit prison bill

Dear Friends,

HB 2638 will be heard tomorrow. Please ask your Senator to vote against
the
bill, or to vote for an amendment, if one is offered, removing the
language
of SB 275 from the bill. The sponsor of the for-profit prison bill,
Senator
Derek Schmidt, got his bill that was going nowhere in the House
Corrections
Committee added to HB 2638, which was not a bad bill, but was not one we
can't afford to get killed or vetoed. It had already passed the House,
and
275 had passed the Senate, so to pass it would need to pass the Senate
floor
and get through conference committee. Schmidt would almost certainly be
on
the conference committee. However Vratil, who voted against it as SB 275
would probably be on the conference committee too, and either Goodwin,
Betts
or Haley would be on the conference committee as the sole Democratic
Senator. Betts and Haley want it to die. Greta Goodwin has voted for it
three times. We need calls to her to get her to vote against it on the
floor and in committee if it comes to that. She represents Sumner and
Cowley counties, plus Mulvane. Calls from Winfield would be best (where
there's a prison, and this is a VERY anti-labor bill) plus Ark City, etc.

Anyone else who is willing to help here, anyone who is willing to call
members (Steineger from Kansas City needs calls, as does Downey from Inman
who represents North Newton too, as they both voted for this bill when it
was in the Senate), please send them the list I've pasted below.

We're getting a little bit of a breather because the Senate is wasting its
entire day until maybe 9:00 p.m. preserving the sanctity of marriage. I
expect they'll take this up first thing in the a.m.

Frank Smith
