:) This is so cool. I was doing a search on the internet to try to find out about medical care for the DOC for my father. He has had hepatitis C for some time and has developed cirrosis of the liver and is dying. :( He has another 2 years in prison and it is VERY doubtful he will make it without a transplant. Does anyone have any advice? He is incarcerated in Virginia.
PLEASE HELP!!!:pissed:
There are some very good website w/info. about Hepatitis C and prisoners. http://www.hcvprisonnews.org/
PA is about the only state in the country where prisoners are actively treated for Hep C!!!! NJ prisons have been experiencing a LOT of negative press about their lack of treating prisoners w/Hep C.
I have done lots of research about Hep C and prisoners--I'm not aware of any State prison health systems that will pay for a liver transplant [or any other type for that matter; although a prisoner in CA recently got either a kidney or heart transpant and there was a lot of negative press about this].
One avenue to check out is possibility of medical parole, medical clemency or early release due to medical condition.
You/your family and/or your father will need to do some homework about Virginia's laws and regulations regarding these avenues [if VA allows any of these avenues at all in the first place]. You may want to contact VA CURE group that may be of some assistance [go to www.curenational.org to locate VA's chapter contact information] or provide information.
Also check out VA's DOC website--some states provide a lot of good information and VA may at least provide contact information of who you could call re: medical release, etc....
Hope this information is of some help to you. Best of everything to you and your father.
If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.
my prayers are with you!!!!!

EGS :) !!!!!!! Your post was very imformative and HELPFUL. It is difficult to be proactive 3000 miles away ( since he is in VA and I am in CA ) and with limited knowledge of the DOC.I went into this blind and have been hitting walls at every turn. I am going to do some research over the weekend with the help of the resources you provided. MANY MANY thanks for your response and answer to my post.....
LuLu, thank you for your kind words :)
Welcome Flower Girl...glad you found PTO, and as you've already seen the people here are great:)

Flowergirl and Daddy's Girl:
Please come join us in the brand new Hepatitis C forum that we have just opened. You will notice the forum has FOUR moderators! Why you ask?
Well ,we are all four VERY committed to this issue of the neglect of Hep C patients and inmates.
In the next little while, we are going to be putting up a TON of info that you might need to read and know. We suspect there are MANY more PTO people whose lives have been touched by this pernicious little virus. We wish to gather everyone together, and share stories, and start some noise and action to rectify this situation.
Those of you who answered this post with helpful info, we'd be very happy if you post similar info in that forum also. We NEED your research skills over there also.
I PERSONALLY would like both your father's names. My husband's name WAS Gerard!
Ladies, welcome to the Hep C family! Please come join us.
All My Love,
Menolly
