For some of the newbies here at PTO, I've seen that some can't get into chat. Here is a possible solution if the chat room's login screen won't load for you.

http://java.com/en/index.jsp

If you look on the Right side of the screen, you'll see a green box that says "Free Download - Java software for the desktop - Click Here" It will change screens, and it will begin the process for downloading the needed java software automaically. This download will not only help you get into PTO chat, but can also assist you with any other Java applet websites. This software/download is 100% safe.

I found information that downloading this could give your computer lots of different viruses. All the information is on the microsoft website. Please be careful and read up on anything that you download to your computer.

The reason why MIcrosoft is probably saying that you can get a lot of viruses from downloading Java, is that Sun Java sued Microsoft over a programing language. I forget all the details, but that could be the reason why.

For some reason I wasn't able to get into the chat room and it said my "java" was missing...so I went to the sun Java web page link in this thread...at first it said it couldn't be downloaded, but if you look below that there is a link to click if you want to download it "manually" and then it will take you to a screen where you have to choose the operating system of your computer.

HUGS...Keiko

Good lawd!!! YOu have to be a rocket scientist to maneuver around this site. Been trying for 45 min, I give up.

Hidin, it is a big site but it's a breeze once you get the hang of it....lol. That's the fallback of being so huge :D

Is there a certain topic you are trying to find info on or just casualy browsing? The best way is to just browse the topics you are interested in at first. If there are a lot of different areas, the easiest but longest, is to choose "View New Posts". That will show you every new post in every forum.

When I first started, I chose View New Posts just to clean it up one time, and then read in the forums I was interested in to catch up. Every day now I do View New Posts and can skim through to what interests me without having to go forum to forum.

But I agree with ya that at first to me, this place was huge....and that was back when we had under 10,000 members!

Microsoft XP-go to Tools-Internet Options-Hit Advanced tab-scroll down until you see the Java. You have to put a check in the box and restart your computer.

Okay, I tried lunachild's suggestion and it worked GREAT until I got to the part about "until you see the Java"........sorry I don't see that part, any hints on just how far it is down the list.

POWERS TO BE feel free to post this wherever you feel appropriate because I'm thankful I got this far......

In my humble opinion I think this site would a lot easier to navigate if the categories were numbered in the left hand corner. For example, I now have to remember where I posted the above remark, just in case, some one is able to give my hopeless soul the help required to reach the ultimate goal--CHATTING. Once we all reach that goal we should CHAT about our wonder accomplishment, just to make ourselves feel good, pat each other on the back, you made it, the road was steap (is that spelt right) and long, but we all made it to the top of CHAT mountain.

how do i get in a chat room?

LeBeau

In order to use the chat room, you must have at least 25 post AND you need to have been a member for 2 weeks or more. Sometimes the system takes a few hours to recognize that you've become eligible for the chat room, so please be patient. There are some exceptions to this rule, and you can read the complete Chat Policy by Clicking Here (http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147592)

In the meanwhile, there are thousands of discussions you can participate in on the boards, which are the heart of PTO- The chat room is really just icing on the cake.
If you scroll down the Forum Index (http://prisontalk.com/forums/index.php), you'll surely find a forum that is relevant to your interests and concerns. Click on the forum title to enter the forum , then click on a thread title to read that thread. Reply by either typing your reply into the "Quick Reply" box at the bottom of the thread or by clicking on the "Post Reply" button just above the "Quick Reply" box, then click "Post Reply" when you've finished typing.
To create a new thread, look at the top of the thread list in any forum for a button marked "New Thread", click on that and it will open a window where you can give your thread a title and type up what you want to say or ask. When you are done, click near the bottom where it says "Submit New Thread" and your thread will be posted.
If you ever have trouble finding a post you made, go to the bottom of the main index, find your name in the list of members online, and click on your name. This will take you to your profile. Then choose "Find all posts by____" and you'll get a list of all of your posts/threads.
Hope this helps clear up some of your questions.

jjj72, I had quite a bit of trouble downloading java aswell, I think it was part of the install process. If you are running Microsoft Windows, I would suggest you do a Windows update and after I did that my download worked beautifully.

If you click Start your menu should pop up, at the top of your menu it should say Windows Update click on that and it will take you to the update site. If you don't, here is a link that should take you there, but it is best if you go through your own computer.
