I want this tour of fl prisions to stop. He's in the closes place to us now next stop could be across state. How do you keep them from moving him? I tried talking to the warden and seemed to get nowhere. Help! :(

Hi Cheryl,

My name is Myris and I also live in Florida. I'm not familiar with the way Florida's DOC deals with youthful offenders but I can only assume it can't be much better than they treat the adults, if at all. I am including a link here for the Florida DOC web site. Within the site is a LOT of useful information, including some downloadable stuff regarding visitations, etc.

I hope this will answer some of your questions, especially the chain of command for complaints!! http://www.dc.state.fl.us/

Take care,
Myris

Cheryl,
If Florida's Juvi System is anything like Texas's you need to take it to the judge. They may have washed their hands of the individuality of cases but that is the best shot I can think of.
Do they consider Juvi offenders to be in the family courts in Florida?

my husband is in y.o. camp until hes 21 and thank god he will be out in a few weeks.. anyways its hell in there... hes also in fl... at desoto, its called the jit dorm and he says is hell in there and the jits dont give a dam about anything all they wanna do is fight and start trouble and my man stays away from all that but he has gotten in a fight or two in there. but he cant wait to get out the guards are alot harsher on them too b/c the jits are so disrespectful to them.. when is your son turning 21?

John has had alot of experience with "jit dorms" ... the younger population does tend to get into a lot of trouble and the officers are usually touger on them because of their "cant hurt me" attitudes. John spent 5 years ina youthful offender camp and was transferred to an adult prison at age 20 he just turned 21 a few months ago and was moved to a regular dorm and there are a lot of differences.
He was telling me the other day that even the simplest things, like the uniform code is different for "jits" (ie for meals and count the below 21 population has to wear full blues and shoes while the older population can wear shorts and white under shirts)

Jitterbugs. Young, angry, antsy. At least that is my understanding of that slang as of the 70s.

I know this is an old thread but just incase anyone was interested: I think it is very different at the female YO's than the male. My daughter is 23 and although she wasn't sentenced as a youth, they did classify her that way and she will be in YO camp until she is 25. The camp she is at also has adults and the only differences I have seen are that the YO's have to earn privlidges, they wear different color hats depending on status and they have to march. The adult dorms are seperate and the only time they are together is when visiting. I don't think there is too much fighting, though with females, they do have their drama's. Luckily, my daughter stays out of trouble and has advanced to earn more privlidges.

oh yeah forgot about the marching. strangely that is the first thing john said when he got to adult prison was "at least I dont have to march anymore".

is there anyone with info on yo facilities in fl ? my grandson was just 16 when he was chged as an adult,he will be sentenced 5/12/2008.(he will be 19 6/11/2008) we were hoping for a yo sentence (up to 5 yrs) but it sounds like this is almost worse than the other side of prison, except that could be 8 1/2 yrs.it makes me so angry that the prosecutor can direct file these kids.this was the only time he had ever been in trouble and because we have a angry, nasty prosecutor we are taking our chances on the judge giving a "fair" sentence. She was not willing to help him at all......he could have went into a youth program at 16 and already be close to coming out.instead he feels his life is over because of something that happened so long ago,and it will be with him forever....it's sad.i only pray the judge relizes that the young man before him is not the same kid that stood before him at 16.
