Yes Soraya,

I completely forgot about this!!

In World War II, Canada sheltered Queen Juliana (or was she still only a Princess, at that point?) of the Netherlands, because she was pregnant. She had her baby, Princess Margriet, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, in 1943. The room she gave birth in, was temporarily declared part of the Netherlands, so the baby would be the right nationality.

The Netherlands decided to thank Canada for giving shelter to the Royol Family members, by promising to send Ottawa THOUSANDS of the finest tulip bulbs EVERY YEAR, which of course they do.

Ottawa has perfect weather to grow tulips, so every spring, the city is smothered with beautiful tulip beds in just about every park, and piece of land you can find.

And every spring, just when all these tulips are in bloom, we have "The Tulip Festival". It is magnificent!

Witchlin, THANK YOU so much for reminding me of all of this. I moved away from Ottawa about 6 years ago, and I'm amazed at what I've forgotten!

For the history, and some GORGEOUS pictures of the tulip beds in Ottawa, go to:

(Check out the "Royal visit" link, once you're at the site.)

It was also because of the amount of men we lost in WW1 & 2 in the Netherlands. They give us bulbs every year as a thank you for the lives that were lost to free the Netherlands. I believe Rotterdam and Ottawa are twins cities also.

Right again Witchlin!

It duelly commemorates the liberation of Holland by Canadian troops, and the birth of Princess Margriet.

Imagine if every country and city had festivals to celebrate the help other countries gave them, what a wonderful world it would be!
