My husband is in prison in a medical facility in central California. He has a seizure disorder and is on 2 medications.
Supposidly he is checked by his doctor there and his blood levels are tested. I am certain that the meds he is on are not working like they should. I cannot believe the doctor or medical staff are doing their job as I can tell when he has had a seizure. He is not having them during the day, but in his sleep. A couple of his former cellies and now his present cellie have told him he has had seizures in his sleep. Last week he went to the doctor as he felt as though he had the symptoms of having had a seizure during the night. The doctor listened to him and said, "oh, go on, you're fine". What kind of medical care is this. I am so afraid for my husband and what might happen to his mind if he is not given the proper care. I don't know where to turn or who to talk to. Months ago a CO in the visiting told me that this institution has good medical care, but the families have to keep on the med department in order to get the care for their loved one. I am so sick of the lack of compassion and the complete lack of regard for an inmate's illness. Can anyone help me?

My husband has the same problem. He also takes 2 meds for it. He has had multiple seizures in prison. He had one and fell down a steel flight of steps when he was in the detention center. They waited until he was out of meds every month before they even ordered more, which meant he went days without until the order came in. The nurses at the place he's in now have given him the wrong doses of his meds, none of one kind or too much of the other. He's been doing well lately as far as I know (he rarely tells me when he gets sick). He never goes to the doc unless he feels really sick. Most of his seizures are at night now also. Usually though when they're sleeping, they're not really seizures per se, they just twitch really hard some times, and others can think they're seizures. Good luck and God bless. I hope everything gets worked out.

Thanks Cindy. It is somewhat comforting to know I am not alone with this situation. I think you are right about the twitches. I do worry though as I can see personality changes after one of these episodes. I am so concerned about his mental health and we still have 5 years to go. If he doesn't get the proper care who knows what state his brain will be in. His sister told me that even on the outside people can get bad medical care. Well, at least on the outside people have the choice of going to another doctor and another one until they find the one that takes proper care of them. In prison our men do not have that choice. They have to take what is given to them. These people call themselves doctors and a lot of them don't give a damn. They just like the hefty paycheck. They look at the prisoners as lower beings. I know a nurse who was asked by a friend who is a doctor to work in a prison in CA. She went just to see what it would be like. The doctor told the prospective nurses that they really didn't have to work hard and give much care as these were only prisoners and not worth their time. I am floored with the lack of compassion that a lot of the public has. It is really sickening. Well, I have ranted on enough, thanks again for your support and God bless.

You're welcome and it's ok to rant. It's better to get it out.
David gets in a mood after his too. I wrote a letter to the governor of Va. when this first started happening. Keep your chin up and keep fighting for him. My hubby has been gone almost 3 years and has 2 more to go.
