Hi, I'm new to this site and I have a few questions that need to be answered. My daughter's father who is also my ex fiance is in Sussex I State Prison. What I want to know is, what's the deal with parole? Does my ex have to do all of his time? Should I give up all hope that he will never see our 5yr daughter until she is an adult and will never see me young again??? I live in NY and I don't understand why he got some much time! Over here, people have done far worse and have received less time. Also, I am taking my daughter this summer to visit him. This will be the first time she is meeting him. What should I expect when I get there? I'm kinda scared for both my daughter and myself because I have read some topics people have posted and none were too positive about Sussex I. What are the chances of getting him transfered to NY? (I bet slim to none) and if he was to get that transfer would NY honor the no parole policy or would they parole him as if he were convicted in NY? I don't even know if the last question is even possible, but a girl can dream, can't she?

I hate to give bad news, however,Virginia no longer has parole, so he will have to do 85% of his sentence under the current laws in the commonwealth. As for a transfer to New York there is a little something called the Interstate compact that he may be able to look into. I was looking into a transfer to California before my release, never got it then, and have applied for it once since my release, I will be trying again this summer.

He should look into that and see what the possibilities are.

I'm sorry that you and yours are in this situation, however I am glad you have found PTO, there are many wonderful people here with lots of hard earned knowledge, that all of us wish we never had to learn, but are grateful that we have the chance to help and support others by passing it on.

bubbles , va is not a good state for prisoners id say that your ex wishes he had never came to va there is no parole for people sentenced after 1986( not real sure if right date) if he stays in va he will do 85%. i know chris said this past weekend that everyone at wise was given parole papers to fill out. i think they did that just to get peoples hopes up. good luck on getting him transfered and welcome to pto

Thank you both for your replies. Jason has told me a few weeks ago that he filled out papers for parole. I also agree it is to get everyone's hopes up, especially after reading all the messages that have been posted. It kills me to hear him sound so hopeful about parole when I know otherwise. I will look into getting him transfered to NY. If I have to marry him in there to get him in NY then I will do it. I have all intentions of marrying him, I just thought I could wait until he gets home. But after hearing that he has to do 85% of this time, forget it. I will be an old lady by then! I guess it will have to be sooner. I wish I was rich so I could pay off some people down there in VA to get him home now!!! :idea:

Before you come to visit this summer. Make sure he has you both on his visitors list and that you have ID. Call the prison to verify the visiting times, dress code, etc. It would be a shame to come this far and something mess up your visit. Here's the phone # for Sussex I 804-834-9967. Good luck.

Thanks for the info! My paper work is in as we speak. I guess they will either contact me or Jason telling me what kind of visit we will get. I will call Sussex (thanks for the number!!!) about the do's & don'ts because the more and more I read the posted messages I see alot about dress codes. Are they that strict? What do they expect you to wear??? Turtlenecks and large jogging pants or jeans so your man can't see your figure at all??? I will keep everyone informed!!!! If all goes well the visit will be 7/10/04. It's been 6 years since I've seen him, I'm getting nervous!!!!!!

well my boyfriend got moved to Sussex 1 a little over a month ago and our first visit was last saturday! I was really nervous to go there after reading some of the threads too, however, it is not that bad at all! the co's were really cool since it was our first visit they were really nice about the stupid mistakes we made like kissing on the wrong side of the red line! there are a lot of weird things that go on there in sussex like they are on 24 hour lock down on mondays and the annoying phone situations, but other than that i would say it is better than any jail!!! let me know if you have any questions at all i would be more than happy to try to help you out any way that i can. good luck with your future visit!
