Prison guard trainee, inmate's mother charged

LEAKESVILLE- A guard trainee at the state prison in Greene County and the mother of an inmate at the facility have been charged with trying to sneak marijuana on the grounds.

Mississippi Department of Corrections officials said Marsha R. Williamson of Waynesboro, who worked at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution, and Willie Mae Lewis of Jackson were being held Thursday at the Greene County Jail in Leakesville. No bond had been set.

Authorities identified Lewis as the mother of an inmate at the prison.

The two women were charged with conspiracy to introduce contraband in the form of money and marijuana.

Authorities said Williamson, who had worked at the prison for seven months, was arrested Wednesday at her home when lawmen confiscated a box of cash and marijuana. Lewis was arrested later that day in Jackson.

MDOC officials said the conspiracy charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
