Does any one know what USP's are Medical Facilities? The reason I am asking is my man was notified that he will be transferred to a Medical Facility in six to eight weeks due to chronic care. He was told that the facility he is at (USP Big Sandy) wouldn't be able to provide the proper care needed if there were an emergency with his health. He has high blood pressure and an enlarged heart. He requested a facility in California since that is where his loved ones are and his home. I was just wondering if anyone knew which facilities are Medical. Thanks in advance,

The BOP's Federal Medical Centers are:

FMC CARSWELL (TX)
FMC BUTNER (NC)
FMC DEVENS (MA)
FMC LEXINGTON (KY)
FMC ROCHESTER (MN)

FMC's house offenders of all security levels. I couldn't begin to guess where he'd be sent, but these are the facilities that are designated to provide comprehensive medical care. Good luck.

As aba explained - technically there are no USP's that are designated as medical facilities. However, the FMC's house all security levels - from the highest max to the lowest camper. Carswell is a female facility so as you can see from the list provided from aba - he will be housed in the eastern part of the US.

There is also the FMC in Springfield, Missouri - isn't there?

You would be speaking about MCFP Springfield. This facility is usually where inmates who don't work out at an FMC are sent to.

Also there are USP's and FCI's that are designated at medical facilities..... for instance FCI Terminal Island is a regional medical facility and houses around 200-300 inmates that are specifically there for medical or mental health reasons.

Not any longer. The BOP has really revamped their medical procedures (for better or worse). Institutions can house inmate's with 'medical issues' based on their medical care level.

Springfield is technically a medical facility; however it has 'issues'. I personally wouldn't want to go there. It's not dangerous, just there are other medical facilities with a lot better care. A few years ago, Springfield lost their medical accreditation. While I'm not certain, I believe they have since be recertified, but they still have things that need to be worked out.

As Greyghost said, Springfield has always had a terrible reputation and having worked on cross-examining some of their doctors, should be avoided at all costs.

Gee - I'm glad you said it Greyghost and Bellisq. I was being quiet on the subject because I have no idea whether they had revamped or improved in the past couple of years.

Greeeaaat. I have a friend that was just sent to Springfield- unexpected, but it did list that he has Chrones. Is there a chance that they might evaluate him there and still ship him someplace else if he can manage at a camp?

I have a friend who was at Butner for awhile for medical treatment and is now at Devens. He says Devens is a lot better.

According to the BOP Central Office: Yes, we still have individual facilities of all levels that are designated medical facilities that may not specifically play the role of a federal medical center.

Me: Is FCI Terminal Island still a regional medical facility?

BOP Central Office: Yes

My husband is on his way to Butner Nov 1. I am glad to hear you say that it has been great for him. With so many health worries, it is really scarrey hearing some of the stories about health care.

I'm new to this site but it sounds like greyghost can answer my question. My husband was designated to FMC Butner then 1 week before report date they changed him FMC Devens we were not told why. He was an SS, we had to change our flight at the last minute. He has been at Devens now for 19 days and at his first unit meeting they said he is not sick enough to take up the bed space so they are going to transfer him out most likely to a camp. All we know is that they have started the paperwork. Do you know anything about this process?
