Yes and they don't give any reason why !!! For May 1st, I sent Joey some lily of the valley along with a postcard. On 05/01 we always do this in France to bring good luck and happiness !!! Well, the lily of the valley was sent back to me, and the postcard too, with a notice telling me it's forbiden !!
No further explanation!! Why is it forbiden, I guess I'll never know !!! Besides, just think how the lily of the valley looked like, after a trip to Florida and back to France !!

Most likely, those handling the mail don't know the reasons behind the rules either. As for doing there job, they don't need to know, and some are better robot's then others.

As too padded envelops, most likely they found dope in the stuffing at some point in time?

I thought the same thing about the drugs...I knew it would be rejected and sent back, so I just sent that knowing I'd get the rules back with the empty envelope :)

That was a pretty good idea to get the rules!! You did say before that you liked to play detective! You must be getting pretty good. Do you have any other tricks up your sleeves or hints to share?

I read the mail rules on that scanned page. Since we're not allow to send stamps. How about pre-stamped envelopes?

Thanks for posting these DO NOT SENDS, but what's up with the scented stuff? I sent my husband two letters on nice stationary, one with a picture. Do you think they will be sending it back? I would hate to loose the picture.

my boyfriend has been in north kern prison for 5 months waiting to be transferred from reception there. and in june he can come home to his son and i thought maybe i could meet some people going through some of the same things.

I have my son to north kern prison.It is just a reception for him there. He is waiting to be send in some other place. Well I am happy for you that it is so little time and he will be home. My son just start his sentenced.

My husband was at NKSP for about 2 months before he was transferred to Old Folsom :(
He just got transferred there last week...
Now i'm just waitin' to hear from him... *sigh*

Mine was there for 1 month. they are limited of pictures 2x2 or 4x6. Don't understand why they can't have cards! He is now in Blythe, CA :(

I have been searching for the list of what i can and can not send to north kern for about a week now. Boy am i glad that i found this thread today before I sent out like 4 more letters that are bound to be returned. He's only been away for a month & a 1/2 so far and every letter that i have sent has come back to me.

i just want him to know how much i am thinking about him - but instead all he knows is that he hasn't gotten any letters from me. This kills me!

What do you mean they can not have cards?? I have sent my husband many cards, as far as I know he has received them. Also looking for information on the $$$. I have sent him way more money than I should in a 35 day period, now he says it did not get there in time for him to go to the store, I am furious, because he got violated 11/23, 11/25 I sent money to county, a few days later he was moved, I then every week since sent him a money order for $ 50.oo and I am being told that he now has to wait until the end of jan. to go to the store and that he has no soap, toothpaste, or shampoo and looks like crap. well I am so damn tired of his winny letters that I could just screem, he is stressing me out to the point I dont even want to open my mail.. I have even overnighted my visit form along with a letter and $ and still nothing. He continues to tell me he has not gotten it. What do you guys think, is he just trying to make me feel guilty or is this a real situation at Kern.

I hear your frustrations. Yes, NKSP is really this bad and this is the real situation. My fiance has been there for almost 5 months waiting to transfer. He said in his letter today that the last 7 to 10 days there has been a "fog one" and there is no movement allowed inside the prison. He has not gone to the store either and he has money on his books. It's just the way it is. I believe they can have cards, I've sent him a few and I think he's gotten them, I've never gotten them back anyway. I'll ask him in my next letter.

The mail has been super slow because of the holidays, it took us about 6 weeks in the beginning to finally have about a 2 week turn around time on our letters. For a long time he got nothing then finally he started to recieve them. He said on the 17th of December he got a stack of letters from November 28th on.

Just don't give up, understand that it really, really sucks and keep sending his letters.

lostlove- I know there's a delay of a few weeks in being able to go to commissary after being moved from county to Kern -there is also a delay in having the money transferred. I have had no problems with cards (glitter is not allowed).
becmarie- I have not heard of the term "fog one" -what does that mean? I remember last year at this time there was lockdown in reception and they spent Christmas day on their bunks :( . Hope your husband gets his transfer soon.

Regarding the stamped envelopes, the attachment said something about "nothing glued".

Metered envelopes, maybe?

DLM- The term "fog one" is one that he used. He just said that it's been so foggy that they restrict movement, no yard, no commissary etc. He just thanked me today for the Christmas cards I sent so I know they can recieve cards.

Thanks I hope he gets moved soon too. I'm starting to think he's going to serve his whole sentense in reception!

waiting4paul - No they are not allowed books or quarterly packages while in Reception.(unless the Prison has specifically pre-approved a package -for example something like glasses being sent in)

That' wierd, because I called the mailroom last week regarding NKSP reception and they told me I could mail stamps as long as it wasn't more than ten. So I did. I hope he got them.

That was a question I had for the group. That posting with the DO NOT SEND IN THE MAIL list was from October 2002. I was wondering if it has been updated or if anyone has an updated list. I wasn't sure about the stamps, either......and if you can't send metered envelopes - and no stamps - how are they supposed to get stamps? Anyway - glad you got this info from the mailroom. I think I'll go ahead and send ten stamps, too and let's see if he gets them. My boyfriend just got there to Reception last Wednesday (1-11) and they had him in the system with his CDC # within two days. So I'm sending out mail to him.......
One more question - is sending him a money order - directly to him - the best way for him to get money quickly there? Anyone know??

U can send no more than 40 stamps.. i got a piece of mail stating all the rule for mail in NKSP, but my man is in Lancaster State Prison now. I got some mail returned to me that said unauthorized mail.. and it was highlighted on the part that said NO PERFUME LETTERS. I had DRENCHED my letter to him in perfume that is had even smeared the writing. I guess it was a bit too obvious for the mail room because that was not the first time I had put perfume on a letter. Plus I send them to Lancaster with perfume as well, just not as hard core ... LOL.
Anyways.. as for the money orders, u gotta get a postal money order and it posts to their account immediately, as soon as its received. Yup, u send the money directly to the inmate. If u have any more questions feel free to ask

hi all, my honey has been at nksp in reception for 6 months, was endorsed to go to Corocoran satf in October, yet he still sits there, I know how you are feeling, FRUSTRATED and waiting for this time to pass. Hang in there, its got to be over someday soon:(

I just got my first letter from my boyfriend, who arrived in Reception at NKSP last week. He said that during processing, they threw away every letter/card he had from me. I thought they were able to keep their papers, etc. from County. If we knew they were going to do that - he would have mailed them home to me.....Is that standard for Reception processing? They throw away everything you came from County with?

Today Is My First Time On This Site As Well. I Am Lost. Have Not Heard From My Baby's Daddy Yet. Ok.....I could use some help, here......I know it's Reception - but when he first got there (almost 2 weeks ago), he wrote me a letter right away and gave me his housing location - B yard -4. I've written him several letters since then, including sending the "mail room" approved # of stamps, envelopes & paper (per my phone conversation with them). I've heard nothing else from him. I just called the Records department there, to verify his housing location - and now he's in CW-95L?? What does this mean? I didn't know what B yard meant, either.....Can anyone clarify for me what these different numbers & letters mean? And why isn't he writing? I've sent him plenty of "approved" stationary...........<sigh>

It's not unusual to be moved a couple of times to different yards while in Reception. I don't know what the diff. Yard letters mean although the L (95L) likely means Lower (Bunk). The mail is always delayed when they are moved to diff. yards-don't worry I am sure you will hear from him soon.

Same here, it is all a matter of time, it took almost a month for my husband to receive mail from me.... reception just sucks, don't worry, keep writing him and they will eventually go through, reception is the worst part of the prsion system, in my opinion, once u get out of it, you will be fine! Just have faith and keep writing!

you have to get the envelopes from the post office?? no more printing my stamps from stamps.com and sending them to him? great. now i can pay my monthly subscription to them for nothing. argh! stupid different rules everywhere! and i like my upsdide down stamps :)

What about the letters you send them are they allowed to have a stamp or does that have to be embossed too?

Just wanted to give some feedback regarding Reception at NKSP.......My boyrfiend had sent me a letter last week, stating that he thought his counselor had come to see him but he was out on the yard.....He gave me her name and ext. # and asked if I would call her and make sure she would go see him again. He said he had heard, that since he missed her that time - it could be another 40 days before she came to seem him again.....So......I called last Thursday, Friday and yesterday (Monday). I gave her the message that he wanted to see her, gave her his name, CDC # and also asked for a return call to me. She did call me, today, and told me that she had received my message - and that she did go back to see him last Friday. She was very pleasant, told me where he is being recommended to (Chino & Donovan). She also discussed firecamp with me.....said he may not have enough time to do firecamp....also - because he's had some blood pressure issues in County, that he would have to have that cleared at his new facility and then ask them to process him for firecamp.
I later got a letter from him this afternoon and he basically said the same thing.
With all the horror stories of Reception experiences I just wanted to share this positive one. He's been in Reception a month tomorrow, so to have already seen his counselor, is pretty good. She also told me, that he will probably be transferred in 4-6 more weeks......

Also - in terms of the mail questions.......I have sent him two large manilla envelopes containing 25 sheets of paper, 20 large white envelopes and 2 books of stamps.....he has received them - and uses them. The letters I send to him all have regular stamps on them. Have not had any problems with mail so far......
