On behalf of the Prison University Project/College Program at San Quentin, I am very happy to invite you to a free all-day gathering of pre- and post-release service providers on Thursday, March 25 at the First United Methodist Church of San Rafael (directions below.) This gathering is intended for people providing support services to people leaving correctional facilities, as well as for all others who are interested in learning more about the current relationship between the correctional system and the community in California. Those who are unable to attend are encouraged to send us the contact information requested below, so that we can keep you in the loop. Please feel free to forward this message on to others. All those with an interest in this field are welcome to attend.
Many of us who work with prisoners or parolees have long been frustrated by the lack of a strong network within the community of pre- and post-release service providers, as well as with others who provide related services. We all regularly receive requests from soon-to-be-parolees for information we do not have. Even when we know there may well be some individual or agency out there providing the badly-needed services, we often have no idea how to locate them, or else we simply don't have the time to pursue it. As a result of this on-going, often excruciating experience, we have decided to initiate this gathering. Our most immediate goal is simply to find out who you are, what services you provide, and how to contact you; our long-term hope is that this initiative will eventually lead someone out there to create a web-based, interactive resource for pre- and post-release services which would make us all infinitely more effective.
The plan for the day is outlined below. A light buffet breakfast and lunch will be provided. Since we realize that some people may not be available for the entire day, we have created four sessions, comprised of clusters of service categories. At each session, we would like each attendee to introduce themselves and (if applicable) their organization, explaining what their current projects and goals are, and any particular areas in which they would like to develop contacts. Feel free to present problems or requests for information that have stumped you recently. Attendees who would simply like to listen are also welcome.
Please bring whatever literature, business cards, or other materials you would like to display on the tables for browsing. For those who have the time and/or budget, we would love to have some help providing food for the day. Anyone who is able to help should mention this in their RSVP and we will give you a specific food assignment, depending on the time of day you are planning to attend.
