WYMT Mountain News
New Federal Prison will Start Housing Prisoners

Within a few months more than a thousand people will be locked up in a new prison in southern Kentucky.

WYMT's Phil Pendleton takes us behind the walls of the new United States Penitentiary in McCreary County.

It took more than three years to build, it cost one hundred and twenty six million dollars and it covers hundreds of acres.

The fence around this facility is a mile and a quarter long. There are 6 gun towers on the outside perimeter.

More than fifteen hundred prisoners will begin spending the next seven to twenty-five years of their lives here in a few months. All behind concrete walls twelve to sixteen inches thick, electric barb wire, and coils of razor wire.

The inmates housed there will more than likely a violent offender. Because it will be a high security institution.

Nearby residents don't have much to say about the new prison.

Residents do worry about traffic on Bethel Road, which connects the prison to Highway 92.

The prison's first inmates will start arriving in April and it should be fully operational this summer.
