Because all I have is whole wheat flour and wheat pastry flour. I mixed the two together and otherwise followed a recipe I found on the internet. I also wanted to try wheat because it is healthier than white flour. Anyway, it didn't cook right, the dough was very crumbly, and the texure was very heavy. It's ok though, fills up my stomach. I'm wondering though, what type or brand of flour is best for frybread? I have yet to find one that tastes like powwow frybread.

I went to a site on the internet, and tried making cornbread. It was under native american cooking. My husband said he hadnt had it in ages, so I went off and made it. I think it was worse that what you explained, I couldnt even get the dog to eat it. PM me the site you went to, maybe I can start over again, and surprise him. He is Cherokee and I am australian, but... hey I have to try.

Both my husband and I are both Cherokee. This is how I make fry bread.
2-3 cups all-purpose flour, any brand will do.
2 tbl. sp. -Baking powder
1 tsp. - salt
1 cup milk
mix together to form dough, you may need to add more milk if needed.
I lightly wet my hands and put flour on them, then get some dough, about a large tablespoon size amount, and work it back and forth between my hands. You want to get it thin as possible, but you don't want it to tear. Make sure your grease is really hot, you can put a match in the grease, and when it lights, you will know that it is ready. you should only have to brown it on one side then the other and it will be done.
As, for the post about the cornbread, was it regular cornbread, or was it cracklin' bread, it is made almost the same way as cornbread, but it has pork cracklin's cooked in it. Most of the old Indian Dinners or Hog frys had this and fry bread.
I hope this helps.
PM me if I can help anymore, and good luck.
