Organizer with Western Prison Project

The Western Prison Project is a regional organization based in Portland, Oregon that works for criminal justice reform in the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah and Nevada. The WPP is an organization in its fifth year, with a small but busy office and a dedicated staff. We are looking for someone with strong community organizing skills to join us as we continue to build a regional movement for criminal justice reform.

Position Title: Organizer
Reports to: Executive Director
Status: full-time, exempt
Salary: $35,000 per year, plus employee benefits (medical, dental)
Hours: Regular office hours, some evenings and weekends; in-state travel and occasional regional travel.

Position Responsibilities:

Coordination of Oregon Criminal Justice Reform Coalition, including: recruitment of coalition member groups; facilitate communication among OCJRC members (meeting scheduling, facilitation, minutes, and email updates); prepare and distribute “action alerts”; co-coordinate (with Special Projects Director) any lobbying activities the WPP or OCJRC undertakes; advocacy with policy makers; specific research as needed to support advocacy efforts.

State Outreach: Outreach and public education presentations as assigned; partner group and individual membership recruitment; VOICE (felony voting rights) Project coordination for Oregon, including creation and implementation of statewide VOICE speakers bureau.

Organizing & Mobilization: Primary staff for organizing campaigns in Oregon, and part of regional organizing team. Responsible for working with staff to develop organizing goals and strategies; primary responsibility for crafting and implementing organizing work-plan; constituency recruitment and management; primary responsibility for Oregon and Washington action alert networks.

Training & Technical Assistance: Part of WPP training and technical assistance team; responsible for constituency training on selected topics including community organizing, power analysis, legislative advocacy, and other topics as assigned.

General Office Duties, including: sharing the work of filing, phones, and other office chores.

Minimum Qualifications:
Excellent communication skills
3 years or more of community organizing experience;
2 years minimum experience advocating with policymakers and elected officials;
Demonstrated commitment to criminal justice reform, and racial and economic justice;
Experience working with grassroots organizations;
Must have reliable transportation.

Additional Desired Qualifications:
Experience providing training and skill-building to grassroots constituents;
Bilingual (Spanish/English)
