(Racine) --- Racine Correctional Institution’s Belle Venture School will host the third annual "Father’s Fair - Community Connections" for inmates on September 23rd from 9am-3pm.

"Inmate fathers want to improve their lives, not just for themselves, but for their children and their families," Said Barbara Rasmussen, an Adult Basic Education and Parenting teacher at the institution who initiated the event. "The Father's Fair can help them learn to be better fathers, better family members, and what agencies and services may be available to them when they're released."

The institution has obtained the cooperation of 34 service agencies and organizations from the Racine, Kenosha, Milwaukee and Madison areas who plan to send representatives to hand out materials and act as resources for the inmates attending. In addition to many returning agencies and organizations, the Father's Fair welcomes several new partners including Project Return; Kenosha Area Families and Aging; the Parenting Network; the Madison Fatherhood Alliance, and Shade Tree from Milwaukee.

The Father's Fair has continued to expand its focus to include inviting more than just inmate fathers to attend and offering information from community, employment and family support agencies and organizations. Information available to the expected 300 inmates expected to attend will include nutrition, child support, HIV prevention, employment and educational opportunities.

The first "Father’s Fair" at Racine Correctional Institution received the Innovative Correctional Education Program of the Year Award from the Correctional Education Association, Wisconsin Chapter. Last year, attendance at the Fair exceeded 300 inmates

"The Father's Fair has been an effective way for inmates to gain the knowledge they need to build strong foundations for their return to the community," said Jon E. Litscher, Secretary, Wisconsin Department of Corrections. "The event has a positive impact not only on the offender himself but also on his family and the entire community as a whole."

Striving to be a good father can be a powerful motivating factor for inmates. They can use information obtained at the fair during visits with their children. They may also share information with wives, girlfriends, and grandparents about community nutrition and children’s programs.

"The innovative thinking and determination of our teachers have made it possible for us to make impressive strides in helping offenders become more successful in the institution and in the community after their release," said Warden Steven Beck.
