Wasn't sure where to post this so I settled on here. Just wanted to post some links to some handy computer programs. Most of the stuff is freeware...cause free is a good price!! I'll add to this list from time to time, but please feel free to add your own 'great finds', Hope this makes computing "life" a little easier. :)

Need a free virus scanner:

AVG makes a dandy one, you can check it out here. (http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm?session=323687b4bba27aef7cb8451133373 f7d)

If you're worried you may have a virus and your computer anit-virus program is not picking it up, this site (http://housecall.antivirus.com/) has a great online scan.

Need a free firewall:

ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp) offers a free version of it's firewall. It's pretty easy to set up and allows you to know what programs are accessing the internet at all times. Surf safe!!

Need Windows Updates:

Alot of people overlook this, which is a mistake. Microsoft has a habit of releasing software well before it's fully developed. Don't overlook these updates. They thought it was so critical that they put a shortcut to it on your desktop, simply click the start button on your computer and scroll up to the Windows Update button... or you can click here (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) and hit the 'product updates' link. You will be shown a list of ALL updates available for your system, unless you're wanting to upgrade your browser or another 'add on', settle for the "critical updates"....they will be shown first, you can't miss them.

Do you use Internet Explorer?

If you do, you may notice that you're slowly losing hard drive space. Especially if you're not familiar with DOS commands. I don't know why Bill Gates thought it would be handy to keep so much garbage on your machine, but Internet Explorer does just that. If you clean out your temporary internet files, history files etc thru the options in Windows, you might want to check out
this program (http://www.fsm.nl/ward/) called Spider. Internet Explorer keeps track of all your 'netting' in .dat files...files that you cannot get at thru windows, you must go into dos. So when you think you're cleaning off all your internet files you're sadly mistaken, it's all in these index.dat files. If you don't know DOS, Spider will take care of these for you. I installed this program on my mothers computer, and she was amazed when I showed her the list of URL's she had visited for the last 2 years, since she bought her computer!!

Need a free photo editor:

I think this little piece of software is one of the best going for re-sizing pictures. You can download it here. (http://download.com.com/3000-2192-10132330.html?tag=lst-0-1) It's a small program as far as editors go, but that's one of the things that makes it so easy to use. It reads all types of files, gif, bmp, jpg, wav, mpg. Very handy.

Need to re-work GIF's :

Check out this online editor. (http://www.gifworks.com/) Nothing to download here! If you have a gif you've wanted to use for an avatar but it was too big, this site will fix you right up. Save the gif to your hard drive and click the link above. Open the gif at the site and resize it to no bigger than 64 X 64 pixels... press save and you're all set.

Goodluck :)

They should be showing up as underlined links in my post above loosielucy. Where I've written "check it out here", the word that is underlined is the link. Here's 2 you can try below...:)

AVG Free Virus Scanner (http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm?session=323687b4bba27aef7cb8451133373 f7d)

Uh oh, If you're gonna click them all... I better post some more!!! :)

Need a Tiny MP3 Player:

This is probably the smallest mp3 player I've ever seen. 150k, alot of pictures are bigger than this little program, but it works like a charm...allows you to make playlists of your tunes and even has a small equalizer. You can check it out here. (http://download.com.com/3000-2139-915997.html?tag=lst-0-1)

Need a [B] Pop-up Stopper:

Ever get sick of those windows that just open up and advertise this and that till your eyes are about ready to cross? This program (http://mycgiserver.com/~adkiller/Eng/index2.htm) stops those nasty little pop up windows. I haven't used it, but a few friends have and they really like it. If I'm gonna be surfing un-familiar sites, I usually just disable java and java scripts within my web browser, that does the trick too.

Need to get rid of Spyware:

Some programs you download say they are 'free', but they contain gnarly little nuggets known as spyware. The spyware creates a directory on your computer, when you use the infected software, it reports back to the company on your browsing habits. [I] Ever notice how you may have done a search on 'online flower shops' and suddenly your mail box is full of gardening/flower site spam? You can download Lavasoft right here. (http://www.lavasoft.nu/) Once installed on your computer it will scan for all known types of spyware, much the same way a virus scanner works. Try it and see what turns up on your computer. Becareful though, if you're using shareware versions of some software and Lavasoft deletes the spyware components of this software from your computer, the shareware may not work properly.

Do you use more than one Chat Client:

If you do, you might want to check out Trillian. (http://download.com.com/3000-2150-10148311.html?tag=lst-0-1) This messenger allows you to combine MSN Messenger, Yahoo Pager, AOL Messenger, ICQ and IRC....all into one unit. Why take up the space of having all these messengers installed on your computer? This is a good little program, fairly stable, with email alerts and a ton of other options.

Do you need a computer tune-up:

System Mechanic (http://download.com.com/3000-2094-10144439.html?tag=lst-0-1) offers a 30 day trial of it's computer janitor. I know it's shareware, but if you haven't the knowledge to dig down into the bones of your system, give this a try. It's good for 30 days, and that's more than enough time to clean up some space on your hard drive even if you don't purchase it.

Is your computer secure:

Take an online test right here (http://security1.norton.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=us&venid=sym&plfid=20&pkj=EDDYYCUMMGLKAHTXKXM) and find out! Symantec offers this, and they're a great computer security firm. They also have an online virus scanner at that web address that is very accurate and always up to date.... with advice on the proper fixes if you've 'caught a bug'. Take the test, you might be suprised what your computer is leaking out!

...have fun!

You're welcome...LOL, here I am putting up all these links, guess I should've thought of that one. The program's not that hard to use, but it takes a bit of learning...give it a try, the link is below.

Need a GIF Designer:

GIF Construction Set Professional (http://download.com.com/3000-2186-7475529.html?tag=lst-0-1) has a shareware version available for download. there are no time limits on it, but it's only $20 to purchase. While I wouldn't say this is a program for the beginner, it is one of the easier gif makers to learn on. Banners and buttons can be made in seconds once you get the hang of it...but it also has the ability to do some more ornate gif's the more involved in the program you go. Spend some time on it, but beware...the results will get you addicted!!!

Online Banner Maker:

Ok, this isn't anything fancy, but if you want to make some animated 3-D text, it's a great online text animator. It's from the same site that I posted about editing gif's. You can click here (http://www.3dtextmaker.com/cgi-bin/3dtext.pl) to check it out. If you just want to make some simple banners, this is a great way of doing it without having to download any software...you can even jump to the online gif editor to edit your banner after you've created it.

...here's an example of their banner maker....

Online Bracket Stripper:

You know those emails you sometimes receive...

<<<a horse
<<walks into a bar
<<<<the bartender says
<<<why the long face.

I don't know why those brackets show up, something to do with the formatting...usually this happens when jokes get passed around. I find it irritating, specially if you want to pass the email on....or copy and paste it in the joke forum. HERE'S (http://www.geocities.com/cj1alt/stripper.html) a handy little web site that will remove all types of brackets for you, nothing to download, simply insert the text you want fixed up and click the button....no more arrows. :)

Yeah- I hate those e-mails... first you have to scroll down five miles, and then those brackets. Just makes me sometimes lose interest in reading the whole thing...

I will try this next time I get one...

How long would spider usually run to clear the chache's? I tried it and it was taking hours and every now and then a message would pop up, telling me that a certain file was too big to read and if I would like to view it on ...well, the notepad thing. In one attempt, I clicked 'yes' every time, on the other, I clicked 'no'.

It all depends on how big your cache is Lucrisid, so the time will vary. Are you using Window's 98? I don't know if you defrag your hard drive either, so that could be contributing to the problem. What I would try in your situation is this....

1. Click your 'my computer' icon on your desktop. You will see one of the drives listed as "C"...that is likely your main drive. Right click on that drive and select "properties" from the menu. Click the 'disk cleanup' button, check the boxes that say Temp Internet Files and Recycle Bin, then hit OK. That will clear the files from your windows directory and cut down on the size of the cache.

If you haven't used defrag, this is where you will find it... you should be defragging your hard drive once a month. Files get 'fragmented', the computer will put files here and there on your computer as you add things/delete things right? This creates a mess after awhile, it's like tossing a bunch of paper in a file cabinet. The more paper you get, the longer it takes you to find the sheet you're looking for. It slows your computer down after awhile, and can cause errors when files get seperated from each other.

to defrag your system....

1. turn off any programs that are running, ie. anti-virus program--usually you can click the icon in the taskbar of your antivirus and shut it down. Make sure you don't have a screen saver enabled--right click anywhere on your desktop, select properties, and go to the screen saver tab, make sure you disable the screensaver since defrag cannot run with the screensaver doing it's little thing.

2. Once you have no programs running on your computer, open the 'my computer' icon on your desktop. Select the drive you want to defrag....usually "C", and select properties on the menu.

3. On the window that opens, select the "Tools" tab at the top. You should now be able to see the last time you checked for errors/defragged your drive. If it doesn't tell you how many days since you've last done it, it probably means it's never been done.... in that case you're long overdue!!

4. Click the check for errors button first, let it do it's thing, it may take awhile.

5. Once that is finished, click the defrag button and let it do it's thing, once again the time will vary depending on the size of your drive and the frequency that you defrag.

Hope that helps Lucrisid, it's hard to know without knowing a little more about your system...or if you've defragged lately. But that's what I would start with if Spider is running slow, that program shouldn't take too long to clear up the files. Let me know if this works, or if you need another hand. Goodluck :)

Sorry it didn't work for you, that's one of the only programs I've listed that I don't use and it runs on Visual Basic, so perhaps it had a conflict on your machine... I'm not sure, Visual Basic depends on runtimes and therefore needs to be updated constantly. much like most windoze stuff...lol If you want to try a different pop up stopper, there's another program here (http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10144469.html?tag=lst-0-2), or there's this one. (http://download.com.com/3000-2366-10133684.html?tag=lst-0-1) Both say they can be run on Internet Explorer and Netscape Browsers.

I guess you mean the Cafe Press Online Co. BSS? I'm not familiar with it, but I just went and checked out the website. Do you mean you want to join there and open up a store? While I was reading at the site I came across their frequently asked questions (http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/help/ownerfaq.aspx) section. You can click that and have a read, but it just tells you about what their policy is. I think it's just a sign up thing, it sounds like there's no cost. Fed-Ex might be able to give you more detail on how it actually works, I've never used it. I imagine you could use any artwork you come up with, you'd just have to submit to them the design you want for the t-shirts. If you're just having trouble signing up at the site, I'd be glad to try and give you a hand with that, just let me know.

Oh okay, so you just have to upload to their site the design that you want to use? If that's the case, what type of file is it that you're trying to upload? You may want to check to see what file type they accept....some will accept .jpg but not .bmp. I would try finding the file you want to upload on your computer, right click on it and select properties. Note both the size of the file, and the file type.... ie. .jpg .bmp .gif etc. Then when you go to the site and try and upload it, see if there is a spot that says "file size must be under ____size"......or "must be valid file type .bmp .jpg etc". It sounds like it's either a size or file type problem.

Want to try an alternative to Netscape or Internet Exploiter:

A few days ago I downloaded and installed a new browser called Mozilla. You can check it out here. (http://download.com.com/3000-2356-10117877.html) It's a web browser, much like Netscape or Internet Explorer...but without all the add on's that make them such memory hogs. So far so good, I like it. Some of you might be interested in a few features that it does have. You know those pop up windows, and the pop up stopper programs? No need for those any more. With Mozilla you can set that all in your preferences, one click of a button and no more 'un-authorized' windows will open unless you click the link yourself. Great feature! For those of you who chat here at PTO, it comes with an IRC client. Some people seem to have problems getting into the PTO chat room thru the site, but you can access it thru IRC. IRC is short form for Internet Relay Chat... and to break that down into really simple terms, it's like a big CB Radio Network. Chat rooms are set up across this network, PTO is one of them....they are called 'channels', much the same as you tune into a specific radio station or a CB Station, you can 'tune in' to different chat channels. All you need is the software to listen into these channels, that's what an IRC client does... it's your 'chat radio'. I'm not too familiar with how this one works, but as I delve into it a bit more I will post the in's and out's if you're wanting to give it a try. The Mozilla Browser also comes with an HTML editor, for making web pages and that sort of thing...much the same as Front Page Express in Internet Explorer....so if you dabble in web design, you're all set. If you want to try an alternative to IE or Netscape, you may want to give Mozilla a try. :)

Hi B-Ray, it does come with some sort of email client, but I did a custom install and didn't load that program. I'm just gonna stick with using Outlook, if it's not broke don't fix it...lol. In one of the reviews I read at CNET they called the email client that came with Mozilla 'adequate'. Sorry I can't be of more help....I've heard it's fairly easy to import an address book from one client to another, but I've never done it. Seems like a whole lot of typing to do if things don't quite go as they should.

I have heard of the Langa Report B-Ray, it rang a bell when you mentioned it and I went thru some bookmarks and I have a couple pages marked. They talked about AdAware in one of them, I like this part of it....

- When you use a program like AdAware, remember it is like a primitive antivirus program, in that there is a data file with their latest information on what is to be removed and how. It often occurs that a new or modified threat comes to your computer before the data file has been changed to reflect this new threat. [This method really is a simple type
of "artificial intelligence" and is only as good as the
"intelligence" programmed into it...] So, run AdAware, but, when it finds a file or whatever it thinks is bad, consider carefully if you want AdAware to do
the removing. If it is something you wish to keep or do not trust the software to remove, set AdAware to "ignore the component:" you can always go back later and turn on searching for that component, then allow AdAware to remove it.

That's a good point to remember, AdAware gives you the option to back up before it alters any files, it's a good idea to take it up on it's offer...just in case. I've had it happen in shareware versions, ran AdAware and it's found spyware and deleted it, but then I click the shareware version of a program and it no longer runs...lol. Some of those spyware components are installed in the Shareware versions, the program won't run without it. darn!

A custom install isn't as difficult as it seems, specially with Mozilla. It gives you the option to do a full install, partial, or custom. When you click custom, it just pops up a window with the different parts of the programs all listed. You just put a check mark beside what you want installed....ie. mail client, chat client, browser etc. Believe me, I'm no rocket scientist. :) If I can pull it off, most people can.

all the best

I wanted a cute little avatar...couldn't figure that out..even with ya'lls instructions and handy little site...then I thought a counter would be good...didn't work out either...now I try the banner thingy...well...hell..as you can see that was another failure!!! LOL Montysgirl, that's okay...we'll try and fix you up. One thing at a time....first the avatar. I'm gonna put up a little picture of a bunny, just cause I know it's under the size limit, you can change it after. Can you save the bunny to your computer? Just right click it and select 'save image as' from the menu, put it somewhere on your puter where you can find it easy cause you'll need it again in a second...okay, so far so good? Once you have the bunny saved on your computer, scroll up to the top of this page and right click on "User Control Panel" and select 'open link in new window'. When that new window opens, you'll see some editing links... click on the one that says "Edit Options". A new window opens, at the very bottom is the Avatar section. There should be an option that says "Custom Avatar" or "Change Avatar", click that. This is where you can upload the bunny you just saved, just browse to where you saved the bunny on your computer and hit submit modifications. The bunny should now be appearing under your name. If you need more help, just ask! :)

PS: I forgot to attach the damn bunny, it's on the next page...lol.

You said you wanted a countdown timer montysgirl? You can try that, and I'll inlcude the code that you need to insert in your profile page okay? You're going to have to go into 'edit profile' to insert this code, there's a space in there called 'signature'...that's where you can copy and paste this code. I've changed the time zone to Texas, but you're gonna have to fill a bit of info inside the code--what you want it to countdown to, and the date that it's counting down. It's easier to edit this if you open up notepad, or another word program on your computer. Copy and paste this code in that blank notepad...

<!--BEGIN COUNTDOWN CODE---><br />
<center><br />
<a href="http://escati.com"><br />
<img src="http://escati.linkopp.net/logos/time98.gif" alt="Time By Escati"<br />
<border=0 width=130 height=32></a><br><br />
<font face=arial size=1><b>Countdown to Whatever:</b></font><br><br />
<table border=1 cellpadding=4 bgcolor=FFFFBB><tr><td><br />
<a href="http://escati.com"><br />
<img src="http://escati.linkopp.net/cgi-bin/countdown.cgi?trgb=000000&srgb=00ff00&prgb=221100&cdt=2002;12;2;00;00;00&timezone=GMT+0700" border=0></a><br><br />
</td></tr></table><br />
</center><br />
<!--END COUNTDOWN CODE--->

Ok, once you have that code copied and pasted inside a notepad, take a look at the 6th line down. See where it says 'Countdown to Whatever:'
That's the first part of the code you need to change, just take out the word Whatever and write in the person's name, and what it's counting down to ie. parole or release date.

The next part you need to edit is on line 10... I know it looks like a whole bunch of gobbleygook, but it does make sense. See the line that says...

0ff00&prgb=221100&cdt=2002;12;2;00;00;00&timezone=GMT+0700"

Part of this is the countdown date, you need to figure out the date you want to count down to like this....

year;month;day;hr;min;sec

Don't worry about figuring out the hours minutes and seconds...lol. Just the year month and day are good, for instance...

August 15th, 2005 would be 2005;8;15

So on line 10...
0ff00&prgb=221100&cdt=2002;12;2;00;00;00&timezone=GMT+0700"
where it says cdt=2002;12;2....those are the three numbers you need to change to whatever date you need to countdown to. Got that? Just the first three numbers, year, month, day...and leave in the semi-colon between them.

Once you have those two things changed, the countdown to whatever on line 6, and the countdown numbers on line 10...copy that code and go to the same place you did last time, hit user control panel at the top of the page, then click 'edit profile'. You'll see a line there called 'Signature', it has a space beside it where you can paste that code. Once pasted, scroll to the bottom and click on 'submit modifications'. Your timer should now be installed, if it's not quite right the first time, don't panic....we can fix it up! :)

toe

Not sure what happened there Montysgirl, sometimes it takes a couple paste's to get it right. I think I've got it fixed, but you'll have to get rid of the code you pasted in your profile. At the top of this page there's the button "User Control Panel", just right click on that and choose open in new window. You can get to your profile from there and take out all that code that you put in ok? Hit submit modifications and that'll get rid of it. Then you can copy this code below... don't worry, you don't have to change anything in this one, I put in your data for you and I did try this code in my signature, it worked fine. Just make sure you copy and paste it correctly, it should work. You did good, got the date and everything in there, way to go! Don't feel bad you didn't get it your first time, this is HTML code and if one period or < or ; is out of wack, the whole thing goes for a dump. :) Here's your new code to copy and paste......

Are you sure you're copying and pasting it correctly? Hit submit modifications when you're finished? I just copied it to see if there was something wrong, and it's working in my signature fine. I don't know what is going wrong. I highlight the code-go to edit-click copy-go to edit profile-put my cursor in the signature block-go to edit-click paste-then click submit modifications I have even printed out the post where you put the code and compared it to the signature block--it matches perfectly--so could there be something somewhere that I don't have active or inabled??

toe

I don't think it's anything that's set in your preferences Montysgirl. When you go into edit profile, take a look beside the signature box, over on the left side.... It should say HTML code is on, VB code is on, IMG code is off, Smilies are on. The only one that should affect this is HTML code, cause that's the language of the timer code. I just tried it again, took the code out and copied and pasted it, and it worked for me. Are you copying from <--Begin Countdown code--->? You have to include that line and the end countdown code, make sure you don't have any spaces before or after the code, it's a sensitive bugger. Here's the code if you wanna try again, I'm not sure why it's not taking, it's missing an < that's why the image is screwed up, but I don't know why it's not copying that arrow. If someone else is cruising this message--and doesn't have a counter in their signature--and has some time to spare, mebbe they can try copying this code in their signature and hit refresh on this page, see if it works for you. Thanks :)

dear Toe, ever since I read your advice here on so many things to save your computer I have been doing things I never had been doing before on this pc. Then one day not so long ago I had a virus....Oh god that was terrible and I had no idea what to do...I just tried things and I thought after a lot of work it was okay...but since then this pc did not work good anymore, it would only start after 5 or 8 times of putting it on and of again and a lot went still wrong untill sunday...nothing worked anymore...I had no idea what to do and how to do it...then I thought about how you made me do brave things before...yes you did...you may not believe this but you did...I mean you made me download and install things and ...well you made me see that you don't have to be afraid of your pc...so there I was...with nothing working , I was lucky I had a start disc...I used that and read the help section and then...believe it or not...I did a format c/s...I had heard about that many times, but never thought I would ever do that...and I did...it took me many many hours to get windows running again after all was gone and then...then the internet would not work...more hours and more frustrations, but you see I did it! Not perfect, but it is working again and that feels so good...even things like this I am learning here...how about that? and if I can do this, then any one can...so for your advice before, thank you, for making me feel brave, and I know you never realized you were doing this, I think you as well...I have truly been learning a lot about my cmputer here...not only on your threads and replys...there ar so many brilliant people among you....and you are so good to share information and advice here...thank you all....okay I know this is not a big deal for all of you, and it does not say much, but I really wanted to tell this here, because this made me feel very good today and if not for all you I would not be here writing this now...keep smiling, Hilde

You can thank me all you want, but if anyone deserves a pat on the back it's you... you decided to 'dive in' and tackle the problem, and now you taught yourself-- with a few links, and plenty of reading....and some hair pulling and nail biting too, I'm sure. lol Do you know what virus you got and/or how you got it? Just remember the tried and tested 3 rules... keep your virus scanner up to date, keep getting those window's updates regularily...and don't open any attachments from email addy's you don't know--and keep in mind if you have the 'preview' option checked off in whatever mail client you use you can get tagged with a virus that way too.

All the best Hilde, and keep learning!

Spell Checker for Internet Explorer:

I've never used this program, but if you use Internet Explorer and you spell as crappy as I do you might want to give it a try. Click here (http://www.iespell.com/) to check it out, it's a free program that acts as a spell checker--specifically for this type of work, ie. forum text boxes such as this one, web based email accounts...that sort of thing. I came across it on some other message boards I cruise and people that tried it gave it kudo's, thought I'd pass it along.

Online Tutorial Center:

Free....free....free is a good price!! I love this site. (http://www.free-ed.net/) You can learn a ton of stuff....everything from accounting to journalism. They offer a wack of tutorials, you can download them and work on them.... or print it off and send it to a loved one/friend that doesn't have internet access. As my mom used to say, don't be a dummy, stay in school. Well I never outgrew my dummyness....is that even a word? Hmmm, I better go download a tutorial and find out!! :)

Security Tests:

This site (http://www.pcflank.com/scanner1s.htm) is all about security...computer security. They have a variety of tests they will run...all at the same low price, free! I know you're all running a virus scanner....since you have no reason not to since I gave you a link to a free one on page one of this thread....but why not check your system for a trojan horse or keylogger, find out what info your web browser is revealing about you--and maybe cut down on some of that spam email! See what ports are open on your computer, ports are doors.... if they're open, you're broadcasting all the info on your machine that any 11yr old script kiddie locked in his parents basement sipping Dr. Pepper wants to see. :D...surf safe!

...and just for fun....
Copy and paste this =rand(200,99) into a microsoft word document, preferably on one of your unsuspecting co-workers who has gone for a break...see what happens. Not that I've ever done this at work. :p Computer programmers love putting Easter Egg's within the code they write...this is one example. I don't think this Easter Egg was written into the code of word2000...but it should be in earlier versions.

have fun!

Screensavers pretty much make me dizzy Hilde...but if you're looking for some you can check these sites, you're sure to find something you like. :)

This site (http://www.freesaver.com/) is probably one of the better ones for free screensavers. Alot of the nicer screensavers are shareware, they have a built in nag screen they use to try and make you purchase the saver if you like it...which is fine, but when there are so many free ones out there why bother?

Here's another one (http://www.free-search.com/), with tons of links to other screen saver sites....alot of them are on the same 'ring' so you may bump into a site you've already been at...but they have a ton of categories there.

And this one (http://www.desktopland.com/) is desktop land...everything you want for your desktop, wallpapers, cursor's, skins.... you name it. Poke around there and see if you can dig up what you're looking for.

One more for the road (http://www.mrscreensaver.com/ss/3d.shtml) More categories to keep you clicking till your hearts content.

goodluck :)

As a rule I would say no Nichole...some of the programs I've listed might have a mac version, but I'm not sure how good they'd be on an imac. It also depends on what OS you are running on your mac. Mac OS X's file extensions really improved Mac/Windows compatibility. In the past, if you sent a Word document from a Mac to your friend's PC, he couldn't open it unless he knew what the file extension was (.doc) for the PC and added it to the file's name. Mac OS X places file extensions on most files, so when you transfer them to a PC, they open right up. What about sending from a PC to a Mac? Again, since Mac OS X can read the PC's file extension, it has no problems opening it, unlike Mac OS 9 and before which depended on creator codes to know what application opens what file. You could install virtual PC on your imac and run basically any windoze program...but why would you want to do that? lol :) You would've just bought one!! And you should be glad you don't have a PC, cause then you'd be busy at those anti-virus and firewall links I posted earlier.

all the best!

Do you know of any good photo editing programs???
( preferably a free one :) )

toe
10-16-2002, 08:23 PM
AGsFriend, it depends on how much you want to "edit" the photo. Do you want to apply filters, retouch the color in pictures....or do you want a simpler program that will re-size, give you the ability to charcoal/oilfy etc? It kind of depends on what you want to do with it, the more options they come with, the steeper the learning curve. If you just want to play around, dabble in a few minor things then Irfanview (http://download.com.com/3000-2192-10132330.html?tag=lst-0-1) is a good place to start. It'll let you cut/crop/re-size...and at the same time it has some really basic filters you can fiddle with. If you're looking for something to do a little more than that, but is a little harder to get the hang of....start here. (http://www.webattack.com/freeware/gmm/fwgraphicedit.shtml) I think there's 15 or 16 programs there, most of them are freeware or shareware. I've tried 4 or 5 of them over the last year or so....all of them have their goods and bads depending on what you want to use them for. :)

goodluck!

Mac's suck? I hope you're talking about McDonald's. :D I like the imac...good for video editing. OSX is a great operating system...way more stable than windows cause it's Unix based. I know there aren't as many programs--especially freeware--for the macintosh, but at least you don't have to worry about virus after virus. There is a bundle of freeware--and other stuff too-- at this site. (http://www.versiontracker.com/mp/new_search.m?productDB=mac&mode=CodeLetter&OS_Filter=MacOSX&CodeLetter=F) You may have to go thru a few pages to find something you're interested in, but the page is laid out pretty well with a brief description of the different downloadable programs.

10-21-2002, 06:59 PM
Hi BSS, I don't think there is any such thing as a dumb question....but if there is, you've come to the right place cause I'm the king of dumb answers. :D If you go up to the top of this page you'll see User Control Panel, right click it and select "open link in new window"....that way you can flip back and forth between that window and this one. When the page opens, click on the link at the right that says Private Messages, that'll show you the list of PM's you have. There's a little box beside the message, you can check it off and then click the delete button....if you just hit delete, it won't take out the messages you want to get rid of. Make sure the box is checked next to the ones you want to get rid off, then hit the delete button...that'll send them off to PM heaven. :)

B-Ray

You can edit your "sent" box the same way.

At the top right of the list of PM's, there is a box with the word "inbox", that's set by default so all your incoming is seen first. Click the arrow and click "sent" and everything that you have ever sent, is there. I delet PM from the "inbox" when I respond, because there is a copy of both (incoming and outgoint) in the "sent" area.

You will note that there is a tracking button in that box also. What that does is to let you know when your PM was sent. You can edit that in the same way. In fact, toe's discription is right on for all three areas.

One question I keep forgetting to ask is, how many PM's can a person have before there system is filled up? Or does it depend on how motor mouth a person is? LOL

The World's Smallest Messenger:

I just found out about this program, it's called Easy Message. If you use one or more messenger services for chatting...such as Yahoo Messenger, AOL, ICQ or MSN Messenger....this program allows you to load them all onto one messenger....and it's only 200kb!! You can read more about it, or download a copy of it right here. (http://www.easymessage.net/) It doesn't have voice chat, but it does have file transfer and the ability to open a three way chat between friends....but the small size of it is what got me. :)

Like Crosswords and Word Games?

Click here (http://www.thinks.com/) if you do. This site has a ton of stuff if you're into "brain games". Word jumbles and searches, jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, math puzzles, trivia, postcards and small java games you can play online to pass the time.

Animated Virus Map:

This is a visual trace route for all those nasty computer virus's that are floating around the world wide web. Click here (http://wtc.trendmicro.com/wtc/) and choose a part of the map, you can see how many infections are in your area! lol... It's up to date with all the latest, and provides clickable info on each virus/worm listed, with suggested help if you've been bitten by any of these nasty bugs.

Too Much Spam In Your Diet?

Well then there's probably too much in your mailbox. If so, you may want to check out this program. (http://www.mailwasher.net/index.php) It's called Mailwasher, and once installed it will read the headers of incoming email-- headers are the hidden info in electronic mail that contains the information on where the email is coming from, and more importantly...what the email itself contains. I haven't used this program myself, but I've heard some good things about it. It's also what I like to call "donationware"....it's free, but if you like it and want to keep using it, you can offer a 'donation'.

Registry Cleaner:

Every computer has something called a registry, it's an area on your computer that holds all the information about what programs are installed on your machine. As you add and remove programs over the years--or days, in my case--this registry gets cluttered with 'invalid entrys'. These are entry's in the registry that no longer exist...cause the program is no longer there. They can be harmless, but sometimes you can run into problems becaues of them. If you've noticed 'invalid registry entry' error signs popping up on your computer, you may want to check out this link. (http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml) This is a free registry cleaner that will get rid of all the entry's that no longer exist. But BECAREFUL I can't stress this enough, you can damage your computer very easily by modifying the registry contents. If you're not careful you can end up with a big useless paperweight that once was your computer.

*****ALWAYS back up your registry before you alter it in any way....this program has a safety feature to prompt you to back up, make sure you do it before going any further.***** If you have any doubts about using this program....skip it!

Are your friends tired of getting a busy signal?

A few people were asking me about this on another board that I hang out on. If you're on a dial up internet connection, you might be interested in the program below.

Computer Answering Machine:

If you're getting complaints that your phone line is always busy cause you're here browsing PTO, maybe this program is for you. An extra phone line costs major $$$$, but if you have call forwarding--or can afford to spend 5 bucks a month to get it--THIS PROGRAM (http://www.callwave.com) will free up your phone line for you.
Internet Answering Machine eliminates busy signals for callers trying to reach someone who is online. Instead of getting a busy signal, the caller leaves a voice message which the online user hears instantly over the speakers on their computer. You can then chose to disconnect and return the call or not. The program requires you to setup "Call forwarding busy line" with your local phone company, a service that forwards your calls to a different number whenever your line is busy. You will be given a toll free number with your Internet Answering Machine account that you can use to forward your calls to. From there, the message will be transmitted over the internet to the software running on your PC.

I haven't used this program, but it is free... you can read a user's review of it right here. (http://www.epinions.com/content_13088296580)

I hate Christmas, absolutely hate it.
But for those that like the crappy season....

Arty Wallpaper Prints:

Thomas Kinkade has a page of art. Painty type christmas theme wallpapers, you can visit the site right here. (http://www.flemming7.com/hb/index1a.htm) Lots of snowy cottages, farmhouses, tree's and crap like that.

Holiday Lights:

Scared of heights? Don't want to climb up on your roof to hang em? Put some on your puter instead, no risk of injury. This site (http://www.tigertech.com/hlights.html) has some holiday lights and flashy screen savers to bug yer eyes out and make you all merry and crap like that.

How bout some snow:

Here's a site (http://www.euronet.nl/~rja/WinSnow/) that'll make it snow on your puter...so you don't have to shovel the crap.

all the best
...did I mention I hate Christmas?

I don't know if you tried this site (http://gifworks.com/) or not, but you can re-size gif's there. Let the page load, click on file, then file open. When the next page loads, you can point it to the gif you want to re-size...either from your computer, or somewhere on the web. It's probably easier if you save it to your computer first and just upload it from there. Once it's uploaded, just use the re-size button... I think it's located under tools or something. If you have any problems with it, just post the gif in here, I'll re-size it and leave the smaller one here for you.

Ok, this is turning out to be one of THE handiest things I've ever downloaded...

Clipomatic:

I'm loving this little program...96k in size!! Whoohooo, totally free. You know when you wanna copy and paste some text how you have to becareful, the copy only remembers the last item? Well no longer...this program remembers what you've copied, and recopied and recopied. Sits in your system tray, copy whatever text you want to paste and when you're ready to do some pasting hit Ctrl Alt + V...up pops a little menu and you can select whatever text you want to paste. What a timesaver. I love it....you can give it a try here. (http://www.mlin.net/Clipomatic.shtml)

LOL B-Ray...yeah it was a small one, but it's saved me a lot of time...and aggravation...though I couldn't find any 'help' file with my download, so I don't know what else it can do.

need to create a PDF document:

This little program (http://naramcheez.netfirms.com/pdfproducer.html) will convert rich text files--but not word doc's-- into pdf documents for you....no need to have adobe acrobat installed on your computer, it uses no part of that program for the conversion....course if you want to view it after, you'll need it then. This is another gem for it's size and price....only 19k and free!!!

want to make your own online greeting cards:

We've all seen those sites you can visit to send a 'virtual greeting' card....but now you can make your own. This little program (http://www.pcww.com/web_mat/freecard.html) allows you to use your own pictures for the card, insert music and type up what you want to say...then it bundles it all into a little .exe file for you, send it off and bah da bing.... your friend gets their own little personalized greeting card. :) Of course...this one's free too.

need a language translator:

This program called Xanadu (http://www.foreignword.biz/software/xanadu/default.aspx) will translate words, terms or text from over 60 different languages. Just download it and install, type in what you want, or copy and paste some text and viola....that means presto....it's converted into the language of your choice. Dunno how good this one works cause I only speak 'dummie-ese'. But hey, it's free!

LOL, thanks for that Jak... I had a look at mine after reading your message and it was there. I noticed when I clicked on it this time that my puter couldn't find my winhelp32.exe file......ahhhhh I said to myself.... I was fooling around re-bundling a trojan the other day and I renamed my win32 file to act as the 'host'. oops....I've renamed it back and yup, help file works A-OK.

thank you:)

Valerie, there is no such thing as a dumb question...cept yours. hahah :) Just kidding!! No, I can't do it for you because I would need your password to log into the site and access your profile...and I don't want to do that. I'm sure you can do this, I'll give you step by step instructions...okay? I'll even leave a little gif file you can use for your avatar...it's right down at the bottom of this post. If you don't like it, you can change it later...but for now, just to get something up and show you how to do it, we'll use it okay? Just save it to your computer...right click on the little girl waving below and choose 'save picture as', when the 'save to' dialogue box appears, save it to your desk top, or somewhere easy you can find it again...just use the little arrow at the top of the 'save in' box to point it to your desktop, or my documents...somewhere easy so you can find it again in a second. That's the first step, just save that little girl below. Don't worry, these instructions may seem long, but I did it that way to be easy to follow...you can do it!!!

Okay, with the little girl saved...scroll up to the top of this page and you'll see User Control Panel at the top left...right click on that and choose 'open link in new window'...that way you'll be able to flop back and forth between windows so you can read this and go to where you need to insert the avatar.

When the next window opens, you'll see a list of links across the screen below the PTO Banner....choose the Edit Options link. This is the page where you can put up an avatar.

Scroll down that page, at the bottom right you will see an Avatar button....it'll say change avatar, or new avatar or custom avatar...not sure which, but there's only one button there so you can't miss it. Click that button and another page opens...this is where you can upload the little girl you just saved to your computer. Click the custom avatar dot, and below that you will see a Browse button to upload a file from your computer. Click the browse, and point it to the little girl you saved on your computer....hit the submit modifications button and presto...you'll have an avatar!!

Let me know how it goes, if you don't get it from this...we'll get it eventually!!! :)

toe
12-13-2002, 10:13 AM
Good work! If you're getting that far then you're doing it right...don't know why it's telling you it's too big, I know it's under the 64 X 64 limit...but I made it a bit smaller anyway. Just copy the image below to your computer, it's smaller...and try it with that one. I'll leave a couple more little ones too, maybe one of those will work.

let me know. :) we'll get it!

toe
12-13-2002, 11:44 PM
LOL Soft, no need to put down your pizza...that sounds good! There's nothing to read, just bookmark this site. (http://gifworks.com/) It'll do all the work for you, just upload the gif you want to re-size and then click the edit button, select re-size...presto, you type in the numbers you want--under the limit here which is 64 X 64....and it will shrink it for you. Hit file save and you're all done. It's easy. :)

Now I gotta go get a kleenex, all these flowers are making me A-C-C-CCCHOOOOOOO!!!!

toe
12-13-2002, 11:45 PM

But? lol, What's it telling you now Valerie? I'm sure it's under the size limit. If you're having trouble finding it on your computer once you've saved it...try this. The small girl that you saved, (if you didn't change the name when you saved it).... it will be called jg_14584 on your computer. Hit the start button on your computer, and go to Find, and then over to Files or Folders. Click that, when the little box pops up, just type in jg_14584 and then click search. That should search your computer for that file you've saved. When it appears in the little window, right click on it and choose "send to my documents".... that will send it to your "My Documnets" folder on your desktop. You can then close that search window, open up the "my documents" folder, and jg_14584 will be sitting there. Then when you go to upload the avatar, you'll know where to find the image on your computer.

If you renamed the file when you downloaded it?
I would hop back a couple pages and re-save that image, don't change the name. When you click to save it, you can use the little drop arrow to put it different places in your computer....point it to that "my documents" folder on your desktop and it'll be waiting for you. If that throws you off, just save it to wherever...and then do the search thing for it. Hope that helps....

keep trying, you can do it! :)
