My mother is there. Im new to the forum also. These ladies and gents have helped so much. I dont know if I can be of any help because my mom has only been there going on 2 weeks now, however I have learned pretty much how it works in the beginning and am continuing to learn as I go. This forum is a godsend for anyone who has a loved one serving time anywhere. Let me know if I can help. Id love to return the help that has been provided to me.

I write a column for the New York Daily News and with Martha Stewart going to Alderson I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight into the conditions there. For one, can inmates watch televsion? What are the rules, official and unoffical, for decidign which programs?

Thank you,
Michael Daly

My sister is deceased now but was at Alderson from Dec. 2003 until April 5, 2004.

I remember she said you have to buy a Walkman in the Commissary to hear the tv.
All items are priced higher than outside prices.

There are several tvs in the tv room of the dorm house she lived in -- it was called Range 1 and Range 4. The tvs are preset to channels. I think a news channel, and a sports channel, and another channel. I don't know who determined the channels, probably the prison staff. My sister did not watch much tv so she did not discuss it much.
I think there were also tvs in the rec dept. where my sister worked some.

will be glad to answer any questions you have that I can answer.

The TV schedule in the main TV room was determined by the unit manager. It was a rotatong schedule. If no one was in the room, you could get the CO to change it.

Each of the ranges have four television sets, and the cottages have two. When I was there from 2001-200 the rotating schedule in the ranges was determined each month by the Associate Warden, however, one TV was normally always set to a new channel In the cottages, where fewer inmates are housed, a schedule was created giving each inmate a "tv day" to watch whatever they wanted.

Just received a letter from her and of course the main thing she wanted me to do is tell everyone hello at PTO and if any "newbies" are going there to look her up. On the Martha situation she said that "the place has been a mad house, reporters, helicopters, etc. They took 15 from landscaping out by the front gate & pretended to pick up leaves. Landscape ladies go all over this place, unescorted but when CNN is here, there were 3 CO's & they were actually holding leaf bags! They've never held anything before! They say they won't treat her any different - well that remains to be seen of course. I'm sure this will only get worse."
She seems to have gotten use to her life at Alderson now & seems to be a little bit happier than before, but still worried about her kids & mom. Please pray for her family!
Thanks!!

No, in April she was taken to Greenbrier Medical Center. She was there about 3 weeks and diagnosed with cancer there.
She was then transferred to FMC Carswell, Texas.
We immediately put in a request for Compassionate Release.
She was at Carswell until Aug. 7 when she was released.
She came home to Virginia and died at home with her family around her on Sept. 3

So sad.
Thanks for asking.
Donna

Donna Yes, very sad indeed Donna:( The only reason I asked was because when I was at Alderson I suffered a brain aneurysm which sent me to Greenbrier as well and then air lifted to Charleston Area Medical Center where I had brain surgery. After the surgery I could no longer walker on my own, used a wheelchair or walker (still do) Of course they also then sent me to Carswell which was like hell in my opinion:angry: I blame them for improper rehab and for not being able to walk today. I live in Maryland. Nice talking to you and again so sorry about your sister Joyce
